Venezuela Suspends Flights to Panama and Dominican Republic Amid Political Tensions

The government of Venezuela announced that it will suspend regular flights connecting the country with Panama and the Dominican Republic starting July 31 at 8:00 PM (local time).

This measure comes after the governments of Panama and the Dominican Republic condemned the electoral fraud carried out by Nicolás Maduro in the presidential elections on Sunday.

The decision is justified “in response to the recent statement from the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela rejecting the interventionist actions of right-wing governments, openly committed to the ideological tenets of international fascism, and based on the principles of full sovereignty, taking into account the presumption of the use of civil aviation for purposes not compatible with security principles, as well as the aerocommercial rights covered by the Chicago Convention.”

“The Ministry of Popular Power for Transportation of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, responsible for national and international mobility, reserves the right to take legal actions, in firm support of the political decisions of the State, to respect, preserve, and defend the inalienable right to self-determination of the Venezuelan people,” the statement concludes.

This measure will be a significant blow to Venezuela’s air connectivity, as Panama and the Dominican Republic are key transit points to other markets such as Europe and the United States.
