Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has begun the process of relocating the nine segments of the Midfield Satellite Concourse (MSC) South project from their off-site construction location to Los Angeles International Airport. Delivery is now complete on the third segment of the project, which is located south of the West Gates at the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TIBT).
The innovative Off-Site Construction and Relocation (OCR) technique is being used on the MSC South project. This technique allows segments of a project to be constructed at a different location before being moved to the final site for installation. Construction of segments north of the Los Angeles Airport’s north runways and outside of the airfield operations area began earlier this year, allowing for an unprecedented level of operational flexibility and workforce inclusion with minimal impact on airport operations.
“LAX modernization doesn’t just apply to the projects we build, it includes adopting bold, modern construction methods like off-site construction and relocation that will allow us to deliver incredible facilities like MSC South, while saving time and money, and allowing us to create jobs for our local workforce,” said Michael Christensen, director of airport development for Los Angeles World Airports.
The construction crew for MSC South is supplied by general contractor W.E. O’Neil who has local employees representing over 30% of the Los Angeles workforce. Because these sections are created using OCR techniques, the contractor may include employees who may not be qualified to work at active airports. The program includes 374 local employees and 2 graduates of the HireLAX apprenticeship program. To date, over 32% of the total work hours have been performed by local personnel, exceeding the program’s 30% goal.
“I am very proud of our team for achieving this project milestone. “There is still much work to be done between now and the completion of MSC South, but I have no doubt that the team assembled on this project includes some of the finest professionals our industry has to offer, and we will be back to celebrate the completion of this historic project with our partners at LAWA,” said Michael Byrne, Executive Vice President of W.E. O’Neil.
