The National Union of Aeronauts (SNA) expressed its “profound indignation” over the Federal Government’s intention to allow foreign airlines to operate domestic flights in Brazil.
The government’s position was highlighted by the Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, in a recent interview with UOL columnist Andreza Matais, as reported by the associated outlet Aeroin.
The SNA considers it alarming that the government is holding closed-door talks with the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) and international companies, without involving Brazilian airlines and, most importantly, without consulting Brazilian aeronauts, who are the most directly affected by the measure.
Lack of dialogue
For the organization, this lack of dialogue represents a disregard for the voices that represent aviation professionals in Brazil.
The union highlights that Brazil is among the five largest domestic aviation markets in the world, and the proposal to open cabotage could have severe consequences, both for employment and for tax revenue in the country.
“Foreign airlines, upon entering the national market, will certainly prioritize the most profitable routes, neglecting the less profitable ones, which have historically been served by Brazilian companies. This situation could lead to the bankruptcy of several local companies and a significant increase in layoffs,” warns the statement.
Additionally, the SNA points out that the idea of allowing foreign crews to operate domestic flights poses a risk to the operational safety of aircraft. The lack of familiarity with Brazil’s specificities among foreign crew members and the language barrier could compromise the integrity of domestic flights, raising further concerns for civil aviation.
Opposition to opening cabotage
The union reinforces its commitment to fighting against bills aimed at liberalizing cabotage and states that it will spare no effort to oppose this proposal, which it considers a threat to national sovereignty. The SNA is already organizing and, if the situation persists, will not hesitate to mobilize the sector, potentially paralyzing operations indefinitely until the possibility of cabotage is completely ruled out.
In summary, the SNA’s statement of repudiation highlights the determination of aeronauts to protect their interests, emphasizing their fight to preserve their jobs.
