A project named Eco-Refineries of the South (ERS), driven by the German company GreenSinnergy GmbH and Argentine specialists Ismael Retuerto and William Hughes, was recently presented in the Senate of the Argentine Nation. The proposal seeks to establish a plant in the province of Chubut for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using wind energy.
The project, based on Power to Liquid (PtL) technology, aims to generate green hydrogen from wind energy and combine it with carbon dioxide through the Fischer-Tropsch process to produce low-emission liquid fuels. According to information from our associated outlet, AEROIN, the initiative aims not only to reduce emissions in the aviation industry but also to leverage the natural and energy resources of the Patagonian region.
ERS envisions a three-phase development. The first phase, projected for 2030, targets the production of 100,000 tons of SAF per year, with potential expansion to 500,000 tons annually in the future. This initial stage would require an estimated investment of $2.5 billion, with total costs potentially exceeding $6 billion in subsequent phases.
The project estimates that, once operational, it could reduce up to 1.5 million tons of CO₂ per year. Furthermore, it aligns with international efforts to move toward carbon neutrality in key sectors such as air transport. However, details regarding its economic viability and the specific contributions of the involved parties remain to be defined.
