Austrian Airlines Leads with the First AeroSHARK-Equipped Boeing 777-200ER
Austrian Airlines becomes the first airline in the world to equip a Boeing 777-200ER with AeroSHARK technology, an innovation that reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions. By March 2025, four aircraft in its fleet will feature this groundbreaking modification, contributing to the airline’s sustainability goals
The subsidiaries of Lufthansa Group continue to make progress in adopting AeroSHARK technology. The first Boeing 777-200ER in the world equipped with this modern innovation successfully completed its first commercial service. The aircraft, registered as OE-LPC, flew between Bangkok and Vienna on flight OS 26.
After receiving approval from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), AeroSHARK was certified for use on the Boeing 777-200ER, making Austrian Airlines the first airline to employ this technology on this aircraft model. It is expected that four of the six Boeing 777-200ER in Austrian Airlines' fleet will feature this innovation by March 2025.
Equipping four Boeing 777-200ER with AeroSHARK translates into significant annual savings: 2,650 tons of fuel and 8,300 tons of carbon dioxide. This reduction is equivalent to 46 flights between Vienna and New York.
This technology will contribute to Austrian Airlines' goal of reducing its carbon emissions. Together with the Lufthansa Group, the airline has committed to reducing CO₂ emissions by 30.6% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels.
“Reducing our CO₂ emissions in flight operations is at the center of our sustainability efforts. The application of the 'shark skin' developed by Lufthansa Technik and BASF is an important investment that will allow us to operate our long-haul aircraft more efficiently,” said Francesco Sciortino, Chief Operating Officer of Austrian Airlines.
AeroSHARK, jointly developed by BASF and Lufthansa Technik, mimics the microscopic structure of shark skin to optimize airflow over the fuselage and engine nacelles of aircraft. This technology allows for fuel savings of around 1%, resulting in measurable reductions in carbon emissions. To date, 22 Boeing 777 aircraft from six different airlines have been modified with AeroSHARK, demonstrating its effectiveness in both passenger and cargo operations. This broader success positions Austrian Airlines as a leading adopter of the technology.
