On December 10, Avianca inaugurated its flights between Bogotá (BOG) and Georgetown/Cheddi Jagan (GEO), Guyana, adding a new country to its destination network.
The Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) reported that the first flight carried 29 passengers inbound and departed with 113 passengers. The agency expressed its expectation that this new and unprecedented route between the two countries will boost tourism, trade, and people-to-people exchange.
- Bogotá – Georgetown flight AV 225 BOG 23:10 – 03:10 (+1) GEO / Tuesdays and Saturdays.
- Georgetown – Bogotá flight AV 226 GEO 04:15 – 06:00 BOG / Wednesdays and Sundays.
The flights are operated with Airbus A320neo aircraft, configured for 180 passengers, offering a capacity of 720 seats per week.
Avianca’s entry into Guyana provides access to a vast hub of destinations, particularly in the United States, as well as other countries in Latin America. Until now, Copa Airlines was the only carrier offering regional connectivity from Guyana, with a more limited role played by Surinam Airways to northern Brazil via Paramaribo.
The discovery of oil and gas deposits has driven rapid economic growth in Guyana, significantly increasing the demand for air connectivity.
Despite not having a major national airline, local operators like Trans Guyana Airways and Roraima Airways cover domestic and charter routes, while international connectivity primarily relies on foreign airlines.
