Avianca relaunches direct flights between San José and San Juan after 20 years
Avianca brings back direct flights between San José and San Juan after more than 20 years. The new service, starting on March 31, 2025, strengthens connectivity between Puerto Rico and Costa Rica with three weekly flights and an estimated initial economic impact of $6 million.
Avianca announced the launch of a new direct flight route connecting San José (SJO), Costa Rica, and San Juan (SJU), Puerto Rico, starting on March 31, 2025. This service marks the return of direct flights between the two cities after more than 20 years. Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González Colón made the announcement alongside Avianca executives.
“The connection of these two cities represents a strategic opportunity to strengthen the economic and cultural ties between Puerto Rico and Costa Rica, emphasizing tourism, bilateral trade, and job creation,” stated González Colón in an official statement.
Puerto Rican authorities estimate that the new route, which Avianca will operate with three weekly flights, will generate an initial economic impact of $6 million. The flights, operated using Airbus A320 aircraft, will collectively offer a capacity of 7,128 seats per week.
The governor applauded the partnership with Avianca, stating: "Congratulations to the Puerto Rico Tourism Company and all stakeholders for making this agreement possible. My gratitude to Avianca for believing in Puerto Rico and investing here."
Building on its existing presence in San Juan, this new service to San José will become Avianca's third destination on the island. Currently, the airline operates daily flights to Medellín/Rionegro (MDE) and ten weekly flights to Bogotá (BOG).
Puerto Rico is also served by other airlines connecting the island to Latin America. Copa Airlines operates 17 weekly flights to Panama City, while JetBlue operates three to four weekly flights to Cancún and Medellín.
Additionally, Puerto Rico serves as a regional connectivity hub in the Caribbean, with flights to 19 destinations in the region through airlines such as Silver Airways, Sky High Dominicana, Tradewind, Caribbean Airlines, interCaribbean, Cape Air, and Frontier Airlines.
