Azul Linhas Aéreas announced today the resumption of flights from Viracopos International Airport in Campinas (São Paulo) to Porto (OPO), Portugal, and Montevideo (MVD), Uruguay.
According to a statement obtained by Aeroin, Azul’s partner media in Brazil, the decision is part of the airline’s international expansion strategy and aims to strengthen connectivity for passengers. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Porto was a regular destination, while Montevideo received seasonal flights during peak demand periods.
Flight Details
- Porto (OPO): Flights resume in June, coinciding with Europe’s summer season. Azul will operate three weekly flights using Airbus A330-900 (A330neo) aircraft, which accommodate 298 passengers, including 34 in business class.
- Montevideo (MVD): Service restarts in July, with five weekly flights on Embraer 195-E2 aircraft, seating 136 passengers.

Strengthening Connectivity
César Grandolfo, Azul’s Senior Manager of Institutional Relations, emphasized the airline's strong connectivity model at Viracopos, serving travelers from across Brazil.
"Azul passengers will now have new options to enter Europe and Uruguay, benefiting both tourism and business travel," Grandolfo stated.
Currently, Azul operates regular flights from Viracopos to 72 Brazilian cities and several international destinations, including Asunción, Lisbon, Paris-Orly, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale. The airline also offers seasonal routes to Punta del Este, San Carlos de Bariloche, and Mendoza.
São Paulo’s Support for Aviation Growth
Roberto de Lucena, São Paulo’s Secretary of Tourism and Travel, highlighted the importance of expanding connections through Campinas, calling it a strategically located city with strong infrastructure for tourism and events.
In January, the São Paulo government extended a decree reducing the state tax (ICMS) on aviation fuel to 12%. In return, airlines committed to:
- Increasing aircraft layover time in the state from three to five days.
- Adding 100 more departures compared to the previous year.
Maria Fan, Commercial Director of Viracopos Airport, emphasized Azul’s collaboration in expanding the airport’s route network.
"We are confident in the success of these new routes," she stated.
