Boeing emerges as the preferred option to finalize an order for approximately 25 wide-body aircraft from IndiGo, India’s largest airline, according to industry experts. This development is aligned with IndiGo’s strategy to expand its international reach.

IndiGo is negotiating the purchase of the twin-aisle Boeing 787 aircraft family, competing with the Airbus A330neo jets, according to sources familiar with the situation reported by Economic Times.

A final decision has not yet been made, and both IndiGo and Boeing have chosen not to comment on the ongoing confidential talks. Airbus stated that it does not discuss existing or potential negotiations with customers.

In late February, it was learned that IndiGo was in talks with Airbus and Boeing to close a mega-order for planes. Shortly after, a record order for 500 narrow-body Airbus aircraft was confirmed, eclipsing the previous record deal of Air India for 470 Airbus and Boeing aircraft.

Indian airlines are striving to meet the demands of the world’s fastest-growing aviation market, as air travel demand has soared after COVID. Meanwhile, aircraft manufacturers face challenges in achieving production targets.

IndiGo, with a 58% share in India’s domestic market, plans to double its capacity by the end of the decade and expand its network, especially internationally. New flights to Africa, West Asia, Southeast Asia, and Europe have been recently launched.

In a change from its previous strategy of buying only narrow-body Airbus jets, IndiGo has begun international operations with a Boeing 777, obtained from partner airline Turkish Airlines.
