Brazil's Domestic Airfares See 5.1% Drop Amid Record Aircraft Occupancy
The average price of domestic airline tickets in Brazil fell by 5.1% in 2024, while international tickets increased by 15%, according to Minister Silvio Costa Filho. The Voa Brasil program seeks to boost senior travel, but challenges such as the global aircraft shortage continue to impact fares
The average price of domestic airline tickets in Brazil in 2024 fell by 5.1% compared to the previous year, according to the Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho. However, international tickets increased by an average of 15%.
During a breakfast with journalists on Thursday (16), the minister highlighted data from the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and revealed that 50.8% of domestic tickets were sold for less than 500 reais, as reported by our partner outlet Aeroin.
The calculation of the average ticket price is performed by ANAC based on tickets actually sold by airlines for regular domestic flights. The information is provided monthly by the companies. ANAC clarified that the records include tickets purchased by the average passenger but exclude those sold with special discounts unavailable to the general public. The statistics reflect average monthly costs due to daily price fluctuations.
Costa Filho emphasized that the reduction in the average fare in Brazil was accompanied by the highest aircraft occupancy rate since 2002, reaching 84%.
Voa Brasil
The minister also discussed the Voa Brasil program, created to encourage INSS retirees to travel domestically. He acknowledged that its impact remains "still limited". The program offers tickets priced up to 200 reais per leg, but its reach is modest, particularly in remote regions where awareness of the initiative is low.
To address this, advertising campaigns will be launched to promote the program. Costa Filho explained that the objective of Voa Brasil is not to lower ticket prices but to increase the participation of elderly passengers in the tourism market. The program has already enabled approximately 200 planes carrying retirees to travel nationwide.
Regarding the aviation sector, the minister expressed concern about the shortage of aircraft, an issue exacerbated during the pandemic. Expanding flight availability and reducing fares depend on the recovery of this market.
"The lack of aircraft has had a direct impact on international prices since the delivery of a new plane takes between four and five years. Additionally, annual aircraft production fell in the three years following the pandemic, resulting in a 15% increase in the average price of fares worldwide," Costa Filho explained.
