Cartagena’s Rafael Núñez International Airport Sees 14% Growth in Air Traffic in January 2025
With a 12% increase in domestic passengers and a 21% rise in international travelers, Cartagena’s airport strengthens its position in the region. The expansion project, set to begin in March, will further drive its growth.
Cartagena’s Rafael Núñez International Airport recorded a total of 722,214 passengers in January 2025, including both domestic and international travelers. Of this number, 537,730 passengers were on domestic flights, while 184,484 traveled internationally.
In terms of air operations, the airport registered 5,339 flights during the month, with 3,981 domestic and 1,358 international operations.
Significant Growth Compared to January 2024
Compared to January 2024, domestic passenger traffic increased by 12%, while international passenger numbers saw a 21% rise. Overall, total flight operations grew by 14% during the same period.

Major Expansion Project Set to Begin in March 2025
The expansion of Rafael Núñez International Airport is set to begin in March 2025, following the completion of the pre-construction phase. With an estimated investment of 1.2 trillion Colombian pesos, the project aims to increase the airport’s capacity to accommodate over eight million passengers annually and generate approximately 400 direct jobs during its execution.
Key Improvements in the Expansion Plan
The expansion will include:
- Construction of a new international terminal building
- Expansion of the airport’s main façade
- Enlargement of the primary aircraft parking apron for commercial operations
- Construction of a new taxiway parallel to the existing runway to optimize aircraft movement
- Relocation of water and fuel storage tanks, currently situated in the Crespo neighborhood

These upgrades are designed to enhance airport infrastructure and operational efficiency, strengthening one of Colombia’s most important air hubs.
