The Paysandú «Tydeo Larre Borges» International Airport was officially inaugurated after a modernization process requiring an investment of $12.5 million. The event was attended by the President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, along with national and departmental authorities, including the Minister of National Defense, Armando Castaingdebat, and the Mayor of Paysandú, Nicolás Olivera.
According to <a href="https://aeropuertosuruguay.com.uy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aeropuertos Uruguay</a>, a subsidiary of Corporación América Airports, the works included the construction of a new 650 m² passenger terminal equipped with advanced technology and modern furnishings. Significant upgrades were also made to the aeronautical infrastructure, such as resurfacing the runway, a new apron, LED lighting, and an illumination system meeting international standards.

President Lacalle Pou highlighted the positive impact of the renovated airport on connectivity and local pride: “This milestone not only serves practicality but also fosters pride in who we are,” he stated.
“An international airport is crucial for the life of a department. Being connected makes a difference because airports bring more opportunities. That’s why we are grateful to Aeropuertos Uruguay, who took the risk, dared, and is part of this process we all want and embrace,” said Nicolás Olivera, the Mayor of Paysandú.
The airport modernization also included a fiber-optic perimeter ring, a CCTV surveillance system, an automatic weather station, and a new fuel plant. Additionally, the old passenger terminal was refurbished for the National Air Police, and a new Fire Department station was built, equipped to handle emergencies.

According to Aeropuertos Uruguay, the project is part of the National System of International Airports, which encompasses the modernization of six terminals across the country’s interior. Paysandú joins the already completed renovations in Carmelo, Rivera, Salto, and Melo, while works in Durazno are nearing completion.
Minister Castaingdebat stated that the new infrastructure would not only benefit passenger transport but also attract foreign investments to the department: “Today is a historic day for Paysandú and also for the interior of Uruguay.”

Inside the $12.5M Transformation of Paysandú International Airport

The new passenger terminal at Chacalluta Airport in Arica (ARI), Chile, officially began operations this week following a USD 80 million investment. The new infrastructure, led by concessionaire Sacyr, increases the terminal&#8217;s capacity to handle up to one million passengers per year, an improvement from the previous 300,000 annual passengers.
The new terminal expands the existing area from 5,352 m² to 12,184 m². It currently includes three of the five planned boarding bridges, with the remaining two expected to become operational upon project completion. The terminal also features 192 seats in boarding lounges, a number set to increase to 510 once all construction is finished.
Infrastructure improvements include:

<li>126 new parking spaces (totaling 486).</li>
<li>Three new aircraft stands (for a total of seven).</li>
</ul>
Additionally, the airport now boasts modernized facilities for the DGAC (General Directorate of Civil Aviation), including a control tower, a fire station, an electrical substation, an air traffic information office, and a new cargo terminal.
“This is a historic milestone for the region. This modern terminal provides critical infrastructure for Chile’s northern border, enhancing passenger experience and supporting regional development,” highlighted Jessica López, Chile’s Minister of Public Works, during the inauguration ceremony.
She also noted the completion of the 2,800-meter runway extension, which enables larger and heavier aircraft to operate and has been in use since April 2024.

The new terminal is expected to boost tourism, logistics, and agriculture, creating new job opportunities, according to a press release from the <a href="https://www.mop.gob.cl/">Ministry of Public Works</a>. Mayor Orlando Vargas emphasized the importance of attracting more passengers to fully utilize the terminal’s capacity and called for initiatives to stimulate the local tourism industry.
The improvements to Chacalluta Airport are part of the <a href="https://aviacionline.com/2024/12/airports-plan-2025-2030-3-3-billion-to-boost-chiles-aviation-network/">Chile Airport Plan 2025–2030</a>, aimed at strengthening the country’s airport network. Chile’s Chacalluta Airport Modernizes with Expanded Terminal and Runway

The union of <a href="https://www.migracioncolombia.gov.co/">Migración Colombia</a> started an indefinite strike from Tuesday, December 3, demanding salary and labor improvements. Although, by law, they cannot completely cease their activities, they implemented a «turtle plan» that could cause delays in migration processes at airports across the country, just as the busiest air traffic season of the year approaches. They criticize the lack of tangible results after several meetings with government representatives.
“The workers express complete rejection of the mockery with which government representatives have held several meetings without significant progress in the working conditions of Migración Colombia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs employees,” the statement reads.

The protest occurs at a critical time for the aviation sector, which is preparing to move millions of passengers during the year-end holidays. As part of the «Mission Christmas» operation, the Civil Aviation Authority projects a 13% increase in air traffic compared to the same period last year.
According to data from the entity, it is expected that between November 2024 and January 2025, more than 3.2 million passengers will use the country&#8217;s airport terminals, with domestic destinations such as Cartagena, Medellín, and San Andrés, and international routes to the United States, Spain, and Peru, among the most popular.

Colombian Immigration Workers Demand Better Conditions, Plan for Disruptions at Airports

Aeropuertos Argentina inaugurated a new boarding access area for domestic flights at Aeroparque Jorge Newbery, as part of an expansion and modernization plan for the airport. The new facility, which occupies almost 1,400 square meters, includes improvements in security control, with the addition of more scanning equipment to speed up the process and enhance the passenger experience, as long lines had formed during peak hours, extending into the public area on the upper floor.
The new area, which will be fully operational by December 5, expands the passenger control area by more than 950 square meters, bringing it to 1,353 square meters, which represents a significant increase from the previous 400 square meters. According to the company, this expansion allows the Airport Security Police (PSA) to operate six scanners, increasing processing capacity and facilitating a more orderly flow of passengers.

In addition to the expansion of the control area, the first phase of the project included the expansion of PSA offices and the start of the development of commercial spaces. Once the second phase is completed, which is expected in the coming months, the boarding area will cover a total area of 1,500 square meters. Mogetta highlighted “Aeropuertos Argentina&#8217;s commitment to innovation, security, and passenger comfort,” emphasizing that the works are part of the policies implemented by the government to improve airport infrastructure, especially in the context of the opening of the air travel market. The new project is part of a comprehensive modernization plan for Aeroparque that began months ago with the opening of new access roads, improving vehicle circulation and passenger arrivals at the airport. The project, called «Nuevo Borde Costero Aeroparque Jorge Newbery,» also included modifications to internal roadways and their connection to the road network of the City of Buenos Aires, on Av. Costanera. Additionally, new signage was designed to facilitate traffic through the terminal, and both national and international arrival and departure areas were improved.

The airport of Guarulhos, in São Paulo, will receive new investments from the concessionaire GRU Airport, amounting to approximately 1.4 billion reais, after the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) approved the modification of the concession contract.
With this decision, the airport&#8217;s infrastructure will be expanded and modernized, improving the quality of services provided to users, reported <a href="https://aeroin.net/aeroporto-de-guarulhos-tera-r-14-bilhao-em-novos-investimentos-com-aprovacao-da-anac/?amp">Aeroin</a>.
In a deliberative meeting held on Wednesday, November 27, ANAC&#8217;s Board ratified the terms of the contractual renegotiation carried out within the scope of the Secretariat for External Control of Consensual Resolution and Conflict Prevention (SecexConsenso) of the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU).
<h4>Concession term</h4>
This renegotiation extends the concession term until November 23, 2033.
According to the decision agreed upon by the TCU, the concessionaire must invest R$ 400 million in the immediate recovery of the airport&#8217;s service level. Since these investments were part of the original obligations of the concession contract, the amount will not be subject to economic-financial rebalancing by the granting authority and must be fully covered by the concessionaire.
Additionally, other investments, amounting to R$ 1 billion, will be made to adapt the infrastructure to the increased demand for passengers and aircraft, as well as to improve the airport&#8217;s safety level. To enable this stage of the contract, the concession term will be extended as part of the economic-financial rebalancing.
<h4>Safer airports</h4>
The renegotiation of the contract also resulted in the commitment to modernize the security systems under the “Aeroportos+Seguros” program, including measures against acts of unlawful interference.
Advanced equipment will be acquired to integrate passenger processing, baggage control, and migration, such as X-rays, explosive detectors, and facial recognition scanners. These items, which will receive investments of R$ 450 million, aim to enhance security and improve efficiency in passenger identification and baggage check-in processes.

Since November 28, more than 20,000 Brazilian fans have entered the country through Jorge Newbery Airport, Ezeiza, and San Fernando. According to official data, San Fernando Airport, specialized in general aviation flights, received 46 private aircraft. Meanwhile, Ezeiza International Airport, in an unusual move, handled 27 charter flights and 23 additional private flights.

According to Aeropuertos Argentina, the concessionaire for both airports, this area was equipped with lighting towers and designated spaces for each aircraft. This operation required the collaboration of entities such as the National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC), the Argentine Air Navigation Company (EANA), the Airport Security Police (PSA), the Regulatory Agency of the National Airport System (ORSNA), Immigration, Customs, and Intercargo.
The taxiway will remain closed until December 2. According to Aeropuertos Argentina 2000, this coordination reinforces their commitment to operational safety and quality in airport management during large-scale events.

Copa Libertadores Final 2024: Special Operations at Ezeiza and San Fernando Airports

The Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation S.A. (<a href="https://www.gob.pe/corpac">Corpac</a>) announced the start of maintenance and recovery works on the Jauja airport runway, scheduled to begin on December 2 and lasting for 30 days.
Although the works will require the temporary suspension of flights, there will be 15 operational days to accommodate commercial flights. The available dates in December will be the 7th, 8th, 14th, 15th, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 29th, 30th, and 31st, while in January operations will be allowed on the 1st, 5th, 11th, and 12th.
According to Corpac, these improvements represent an investment of 7 million soles and are aimed at optimizing the runway and the aircraft platform. The project was previously managed by representatives of the Junín region, with the support of Congressman Jorge Montoya.
The Jauja airport currently receives daily flights from SKY Airlines, operated with A320neo aircraft, and LATAM Airlines, which uses A319 and A320 aircraft, transporting more than 240,000 passengers annually.

Jauja Airport Runway to Undergo $7M Upgrade: Key Dates for Flight Operations

Arriving at the Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez Airport in Santiago, Chile (SCL) is, at any time of the day, a nerve-wracking experience—not due to the infrastructure of the airport itself, but because of the bottleneck in the Immigration area.
Endless lines, drawn-out procedures, indifference, disdain, and a lack of willingness to expedite the process are common occurrences that only harm passengers and, by extension, tourism and the country’s economy.
I frequently travel to Santiago for work. On November 26, I arrived at the airport around noon after a two-hour flight. The walk from the plane to the Immigration area was smooth and fluid, but upon reaching the escalators leading to the control booths, the scene before me was a familiar one—something I had encountered many times over the years.

The line stretched almost to the base of the escalators, and the queues snaked back and forth four and a half times the length of the room, foreshadowing a long wait just to gain entry.
Movement was excessively slow, with only four booths open, and the time required for each passenger’s processing often seemed unnecessarily long.

<h4>Technology unused</h4>
Meanwhile, the 30 kiosks designated for Chilean residents, similar to those in Ezeiza or Aeroparque, were nearly empty. Only three people were using them.
I asked an official if there was an issue with the equipment, but he assured me that “all of them” were operational. Do Chileans not want to use them? Are they unaware of how to do so? Is the process too complicated? That doesn’t appear to be the case.
Chilean residents and citizens were opting to use the other four booths designated for them in their exclusive area. Naturally, processing Chileans is quicker than processing foreigners, who are often asked how long they plan to stay, where they’ll lodge, and the purpose of their visit, among other questions.
As a result, this section cleared faster than the one for foreigners. Forty minutes passed before a fifth booth was staffed, and another 15 minutes before a sixth became operational. This was still insufficient, as nearly an hour and a half had elapsed since my arrival, and there was still a significant group of people ahead of me.
Finally, someone had the bright idea to redirect part of the line to the Chilean residents&#8217; area, which was now nearly empty. This alleviated the congestion, and the line quickly shortened, but the passengers had already been inconvenienced.
<h4>Common sense</h4>
I wonder how much simpler it would be if Chilean residents used the automated kiosks. This would free up resources to focus on foreigner processing and reduce wait times.
By the time I passed through Immigration, it had been an hour and 45 minutes since I arrived—almost as long as my flight.
Bottlenecks occur in airports worldwide, but the way the problem is addressed makes Merino Benítez unique and even frustrating.
The situation repeats itself during departure immigration, with the added risk of missing your flight if you don’t arrive at the airport early enough.
And that’s assuming exit checks are less rigorous than entry ones. During my departure on the 27th, the line for exit processing stretched to the entrance of the area, looping four times between the separator tapes.
<h4>The role of the PDI</h4>
The PDI (Investigative Police of Chile) is responsible for immigration checks, but their approach often leaves much to be desired in terms of efficiency. It seems the staff working at the airport are largely inexperienced or poorly trained.
This lack of experience hinders their ability to «read» passengers to identify irregularities that might require more thorough inspections. This inefficiency extends wait times for everyone, despite the number of people who have been waiting in line for ages.
The expectation isn’t for lax controls, but rather for efficient and swift ones—something that is far from impossible and is successfully implemented in other parts of the world, even at busier airports than Chile’s capital.
What’s most troubling and infuriating is the apparent disregard for passengers’ struggles and the absence of any clear effort to streamline processes without compromising security.
Crowds are common at all airports, but the way they are managed makes the difference. At Frankfurt Airport, for instance, bottlenecks can be even worse than in Chile, yet processing rarely takes more than 25–30 minutes. No one who has gone through Frankfurt would call the checks “light”—quite the opposite.
At Madrid’s Barajas Airport, signs display the maximum expected processing time, which is strictly adhered to. Additional staff are deployed during peak times to expedite the process. There’s no shortage of examples of efficiency, especially with advanced technology.
<h4>A recurring problem</h4>
This account might seem like a typical passenger’s complaint, but it has been the subject of serious criticism from other travelers, airlines, and tourism companies.
Recently, Peter Cerdá, Vice President for the Americas at the International Air Transport Association (IATA), raised the issue on his LinkedIn account.
Cerdá noted that lengthy queues and inefficiencies in both arrival and departure immigration processes occur daily, an issue authorities have failed to address, harming the travel experience, tourism, and the country’s image.
“It’s been seven months since my last post on this same issue, and travelers and airlines are fed up with the long wait times and frustrating congestion at Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benítez Airport. This is not a minor inconvenience but a failure that affects tourism, business travel, and Chile’s global reputation. While travelers wait in line for hours, who is taking responsibility?” Cerdá said.
This is not an isolated incident or a one-off occurrence during peak hours; it is a persistent problem at all times of the day. As Cerdá points out, it has been an issue for a long time, with no concrete action taken toward a definitive solution.

Santiago Airport Immigration Delays: A Persistent Bottleneck Impacting Travelers

VINCI Airports completed modernization works at seven airports in the Amazon region and held a symbolic ceremony to deliver the projects, attended by top company executives at Porto Velho Airport.
The modernization works are part of the commitment undertaken by VINCI Airports in 2021 when incorporating the airports of the Brazilian Amazon. The investment made by the consortium amounted to 1.4 billion reais (~USD 232 million), allocated to the airports of Manaus, Tefé, Tabatinga in Amazonas; Porto Velho, Rondônia; Boa Vista, Roraima; Rio Branco and Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre.
During the inauguration event, the results of the works carried out at each airport were presented, ranging from the renovation of passenger terminals and runways to the installation of new cooling and lighting systems. The completion of these interventions ensures that the airports are prepared to meet the growing passenger demand while promoting sustainability and local progress.
The Regional Director of <a href="https://www.vinci-airports.com/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">VINCI Airports</a> for Portugal, Brazil, and Cape Verde, Thierry Ligonnière, stated that «these improvements delivered to the Amazonian airports are a testament to a necessary investment, a sign of confidence in the development potential of these regions, and will drive job creation and local economic growth.»

<h4>Works at Porto Velho</h4>
At Porto Velho Airport, the improvements included the expansion and restructuring of the passenger terminal, runway modernization, and the installation of new accessibility and cooling systems. These interventions have increased operational capacity, enabling the airport to handle domestic and international flights with greater comfort and efficiency.
<h4>Manaus Airport (MAO)</h4>
The works at Manaus Airport involved the renovation of departure and arrival halls, modernization of baggage conveyor belts, installation of new cooling systems, and replacement of lighting with LED technology. Additionally, an automated domestic boarding system was implemented, and the international boarding flow was restructured, offering greater comfort and efficiency. 
In terms of sustainability, a Sustainability Complex was created, including a new electrical substation and an advanced wastewater treatment system.
<h4>Tefé and Tabatinga Airports</h4>
At Tefé and Tabatinga airports, improvements focused on safety and sustainability, with the installation of a new solar-powered night lighting system using autonomous LED lights to ensure operational safety. This was implemented under an unprecedented Sandbox procedure in collaboration with civil aviation authorities (ANAC) to serve as a proof of concept for this innovative solution in Brazil and enable regulatory advancements accordingly.
Additionally, boarding and disembarking areas were remodeled, waste treatment facilities were reviewed, and accessibility was improved.
<h4>Boa Vista Airport</h4>
The modernization and expansion works by VINCI Airports at Boa Vista Airport addressed a longstanding issue in northern Amazonia, permanently resolving runway limitations and improving infrastructure to meet growing passenger demand. The boarding lounge, arrival area, baggage claim area, and food court were expanded.
The new area spans 375 square meters, more than doubling the previous structure, and includes facilities for persons with disabilities (PWD) and families, inspection areas for agencies such as Anvisa and Vigiagro, passport control, customs, and baggage claim carousels.
Additionally, twelve new check-in counters with automated conveyor belts were installed, enhancing operational safety and preventing luggage damage. The baggage carousels are larger and offer more comfort to passengers.
<h4>Rio Branco and Cruzeiro do Sul Airports</h4>
At Rio Branco Airport, the modernization works resulted in a more functional terminal, with improvements to the boarding area, restrooms, and runway. At Cruzeiro do Sul Airport, efforts focused on enhancing the terminal and runway infrastructure. The upgrades included the installation of new signage, adapted restrooms, and more comfortable boarding and disembarking areas, improving the user experience.
<h4>Increasing connectivity in the Amazon region</h4>
In addition to structural improvements and ensuring operational safety, the Amazon Airports Concessionaire conducted strategic work to enhance connectivity and passenger traffic across the seven terminals. Eleven new destinations were made available—eight domestic and three international—and the expectation is for traffic at the seven airports to grow by around 10% by 2025.
Furthermore, five of the seven terminals have already surpassed the passenger numbers recorded in 2019, with Boa Vista and Rio Branco showing growth of 32% and 24%, respectively, marking the best operational results in their history. Manaus is expected to match pre-pandemic levels next year but will close 2024 with nearly 2.95 million passengers, just 1% below 2019 figures.

VINCI Airports Enhances Connectivity with Modernization of Seven Brazilian Terminals

This Wednesday, November 27, between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., the air contingency and emergency drill Athenea 2024 was conducted at José María Córdova International Airport, located in Rionegro, serving Medellín. During this exercise, air operations continued without interruption, as reported by the Civil Aviation Authority.
The main objective of the exercise was to evaluate the response capacity of the participating entities in a critical scenario, which on this occasion simulated the hijacking of an Airbus A320 with 50 passengers on board. This event allowed for the measurement of the effectiveness of emergency procedures, reaction times, and the functionality of the teams and resources involved. In the scenario, an A320 aircraft requested a pushback and engine start, but during taxiing to the holding point, two individuals simulated a hijacking. The captain notified the control tower that the aircraft was being held, which activated the emergency protocol of the Airport Operations Coordination Center (CECOA).
The Airport Police coordinated the cordoning off of the area, while negotiators attempted to establish contact with the hijackers. However, the drill included an escalation of the event, with gunfire inside the aircraft, intervention by the Air Force special group, and a fire caused by an explosion in the aircraft&#8217;s cargo hold. Firefighters handled the fire and evacuated the injured.
The drill involved the participation of airport firefighters, the Air Force, the Airport Police, Airport Medical Services, and external personnel such as the BRAC group and the municipal firefighters from Rionegro. The entire exercise was supervised by the Emergency Operations Center (COE), which led the actions to ensure an effective and coordinated response.
The «Athenea 2024» drill was part of a broader strategy for preparedness in the face of air emergencies in Colombia. A recent example is the drill conducted on August 31 at Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellín, where an air accident was simulated due to a runway excursion involving a Jetstream 32 from the airline Moon Flights.
On that occasion, the emergency involved a brake system failure that caused the collapse of the right main landing gear, followed by an explosion and the projection of components. The exercise included the activation of the Firefighting Service (SEI) and coordination between the control tower, CECOA, and emergency teams to manage the situation and ensure subsequent safety with a foreign object debris sweep on the runway.
<h4>Comprehensive preparation for air safety</h4>
Both exercises highlight the importance of conducting realistic and well-planned drills to strengthen airports&#8217; operational preparedness. These activities not only allow for the evaluation of the effectiveness of emergency procedures, but also foster inter-institutional collaboration, a key factor in maintaining safe environments in aviation.
With drills such as «Athenea 2024» and the one held at Olaya Herrera, the Colombian aviation industry demonstrates continuous improvement in the management of air emergencies.

Athenea 2024: Major Air Emergency Drill Conducted at José María Córdova Airport

The Government of Chile presented the progress of the bidding process for the new concession of La Araucanía Airport (SCQP) in Temuco. The initiative will represent an investment of around 138 million dollars to modernize and increase the terminal&#8217;s capacity.
On December 20, 2024, the offer submitted by the group composed of Belfi and Icafal will be opened and reviewed before being awarded during the first quarter of 2025. The start of the works is expected to take place starting in 2027.
The Minister of Public Works, Jessica López, said that «we are in a process of modernization and expansion of almost all airports in the country, and La Araucanía airport is no exception. We have already received an offer for the new concession from a group composed of two airport operators, and we hope to move forward to develop this project with an investment close to 138 million dollars.»

<h4>Details of the works</h4>
On the land side, the works at <a href="https://www.aeropuertoaraucania.cl/araucania_nuevo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">La Araucanía Airport</a> will quadruple the covered area of the terminal, increasing it from 5,570 m² to 22,276 m². In addition, the parking capacity, which currently has 356 spaces, will be increased to a total of 508 available bays.
According to the National State, the airport is expected to receive more than three million passengers annually by 2030, three times the current number.
On the airside, the commercial platform&#8217;s capacity is expected to accommodate six aircraft instead of the current four. The commercial platform will increase from 22,770 m² to 42,994 m².
The presidential delegate, Eduardo Abdala, stated that «a new airport is key, not only for connectivity and receiving tourists who visit our region, but also for boosting the economy, developing productive activities, and cargo transportation.»
<h4>Greater security and control</h4>
The new airport will feature seven automatic check-in systems, eight police control posts from the Police Investigations Department, four for immigration, and four for emigration, as well as three customs control posts from the SAG, and 6 automatic check-in modules.
The new concession also includes new aeronautical facilities for the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC). There will be a reorganization of vehicular and pedestrian circulation within the airport, new electrical installations and visual aids, and the wastewater treatment plant will be expanded.

Chile Advances New Concession for La Araucanía Airport with $138 Million Investment

International Air Transport Association (IATA) warned about the deterioration of the runway at the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia, Guanacaste, urging the Costa Rican government «to promptly reactivate the rehabilitation project previously underway, as well as a short-, medium-, and long-term maintenance plan to ensure its proper functionality.»
Given that Liberia Airport is a key entry point for international travelers visiting Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, operational disruptions could negatively impact the local economy.
IATA points out that the runway&#8217;s deterioration has worsened over the past year, an issue the industry has repeatedly highlighted, partly due to heavy rains and delays in the previously planned rehabilitation work. The suspension of the works has not only complicated airline planning but also caused disruptions during the high season, when thousands of tourists, mainly from the United States and Canada, visit the region.
The association, representing over 300 airlines worldwide, also mentioned issues stemming from the sudden closure of the airport and its subsequent reopening. According to the organization, this decision led to flight diversions and cancellations, affecting scheduled itineraries and inconveniencing passengers.
«IATA reiterates its willingness to collaborate and establish an open communication channel with authorities to ensure that operations at the airport can be conducted safely, efficiently, and smoothly,» it concluded.

<a href="https://zurichairportbrasil.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Zurich Airport Brasil</a>, the concessionaire of the Vitória Airport in the southeast of the country, reported that its real estate area dedicated to logistics businesses has been strengthened with the warehouse of Mercado Libre, an Argentine-origin company that has become a leader in e-commerce in Latin America and operates in Brazil under the name Mercado Livre.
The company detailed that the operational area of the new warehouse spans 900 square meters, allowing for an average processing capacity of about 14,000 packages per day. A key advantage is its direct connection to the aircraft platform, making operations more efficient.
«Mercado Libre&#8217;s warehouse handles goods from all over the country, underscoring the strategic importance of Vitória&#8217;s location for the logistics business,» concluded Zurich Airport Brasil.

Since taking over Vitória Airport in January 2020, one of Zurich Airport Brasil&#8217;s key focuses has been developing real estate investments on land adjacent to the operational sector, totaling one million square meters (approximately 15% of the entire airport area). Mercado Libre Boosts Operations in Brazil with 900m² Facility at Vitória Airport

The National Civil Aviation Administration of <a href="https://aviacionline.com/2024/11/argentina-simplifica-los-tramites-para-el-transporte-aereo-no-regular-con-aviones-de-hasta-19-plazas/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Argentina</a> (<a href="https://www.argentina.gob.ar/anac" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ANAC</a>) presented the monthly operations report for October 2024, and in this article, we summarize the ten international routes with the highest occupancy during the tenth month of the year.
During October 2024, airports across Argentina recorded a total of 1.09 million passengers on international flights, representing an increase of 6.3% compared to the previous year. A total of 7,068 international flights were carried out in October, surpassing the count for the same month in 2023 by 4.1%.
So far in 2024, nearly 11 million passengers have taken international flights, exceeding the same period in 2023 by 13.4%. Up to October, 73,218 international flights were recorded, excluding cargo-only flights, representing a 12.1% increase in operations compared to January through October 2023.
Rank No. 10: Córdoba &#8211; Lima
The route connecting Córdoba with Lima, Peru, takes the tenth spot on the list, with a total of 64 flights in the month and an 86% load factor. This service is exclusively operated by LATAM Airlines, using Airbus A320 and A319 aircraft depending on demand.
Rank No. 9: Ezeiza &#8211; Atlanta
This route ranks ninth, with a total of 61 flights in October and an 87% load factor. The service is operated by Delta Air Lines, offering seats under codeshare with Aerolíneas Argentinas and other SkyTeam member airlines. For most of October, it was operated with Boeing 767-400 aircraft, switching to Airbus A330-900 starting October 28.

The eighth position goes to the route connecting Ezeiza with Bogotá, registering a total of 195 flights with an 87% load factor. The service is operated by Avianca, using Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A320neo aircraft, and by GOL, with Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The service by Aerolíneas Argentinas operating from Jorge Newbery Airport is excluded.
Rank No. 7: Ezeiza &#8211; New York
The route between Ezeiza and New York ranks seventh, with a total of 65 flights in October and a 90% load factor. For most of October, American Airlines operated a daily flight with Boeing 777-200 aircraft, and starting October 27, Delta Air Lines joined with a daily flight using Airbus A330-900 aircraft.

The connection between Ezeiza and Miami ranks sixth, with a total of 222 flights and a 91% load factor. Aerolíneas Argentinas operates two daily flights with Airbus A330-200 aircraft, while American Airlines offers two daily flights with Boeing 777-200 aircraft, adding a third flight with the same model at the end of the month.

In fifth place is one of the routes with the highest number of flights during the month: a total of 327 operations and a 92% load factor. In October, this route was operated by four airlines: Iberia, with three weekly flights; Aerolíneas Argentinas, with ten weekly flights; and Air Europa, with seven weekly flights.

The fourth spot is taken by the route exclusively operated by Copa Airlines, using Boeing 737 MAX 9 and 737-800 aircraft, offering up to five daily flights. In total, 275 flights with a 92% load factor were recorded.

The third position in the ranking belongs to the connection between Ezeiza and Houston, operated by United Airlines. In October, a total of 63 flights with a 95% load factor were recorded. The U.S. airline offers one daily flight with Boeing 777-200 aircraft, plus three additional weekly flights with the same model.
Rank No. 2: Córdoba &#8211; Panama
The second position is occupied by a route departing from the country&#8217;s interior: Córdoba &#8211; Panama, exclusively operated by Copa Airlines. In October, 104 flights with a 96% load factor were recorded. The airline schedules two daily flights with Boeing 737-800 aircraft to the capital of Córdoba.
Rank No. 1: Rosario &#8211; Panama
The top spot goes to another route departing from the interior of the country, specifically from the city of Rosario. The service, exclusively operated by Copa Airlines, features a daily flight using Boeing 737-800, 737 MAX 8, or 737 MAX 9 aircraft. In October, this route recorded a total of 60 flights with a 98% load factor.

Copa Airlines Dominates Argentina’s Top International Routes: ANAC Data

State Law 14,789, initiated by the Executive Branch, is now in effect, authorizing the granting of economic subsidies—transfers aimed at covering the operational costs of the beneficiary entity. The new incentive targets international airline operations in Bahia, starting June 18, 2024.
According to our associated media outlet in Brazil, <a href="https://aeroin.net/bahia-implementa-subvencao-economica-para-atrair-voos-internacionais-e-impulsionar-o-turismo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AEROIN</a>, the Government of Bahia has announced that, to access the subsidy, companies must launch flights originating from, connecting through, or destined for airports located in Bahia, with a minimum of two weekly frequencies. It is estimated that this measure will impact the state’s annual budget by up to 20 million reais.
According to the Secretariat of Tourism (Setur-BA), the law aims to boost the flow of international visitors to Bahia, generating business opportunities and jobs. “This measure by the State Government positions Bahia at a new competitive level within the highly contested international tourism market. With the subsidy law, we are confident that we will attract the interest of airlines worldwide, bringing more foreign tourists to invigorate our economy,” said Setur-BA’s head, Maurício Bacelar.
Bahia, which currently offers air connectivity with Europe (Portugal, Spain, and France) and South America (Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay), serves as the gateway for more than 40% of international tourists visiting northeastern Brazil. These figures, provided by the Federal Police and the Ministry of Tourism, underscore the region&#8217;s strategic importance for the country’s tourism sector.
Out of the 11 airports in Bahia currently offering regular flights (Porto Seguro, Barreiras, Guanambi, Ilheus, Lencois, Salvador, Marau, Cairu, Salvador, Una, and Vitoria da Conquista), only two receive international flights:

International Airlines in Bahia: New Subsidy Law Targets Expanded Tourism in 2024

Air connectivity in the Vichada department is undergoing a transformation. <a href="https://www.aerocivil.gov.co/prensa/noticias/Pages/Es-un-hecho-El-Gobierno-del-Cambio-inicio-las-obras-en-el-aeropuerto-de-Cumaribo-Vichada.aspx">The Civil Aeronautics Authority of Colombia</a>, within the framework of the Social Airports strategy, has launched two key projects in the municipalities of Cumaribo and La Primavera, with a combined investment exceeding COP 120 billion (USD 27.2 million) aimed at integrating this region with the rest of the country.
In Cumaribo, the largest municipality in Colombia, the laying of the foundation stone marks the beginning of works at its aerodrome, with a projected investment of COP 57 billion (USD 12.932 million).
This project includes the construction of a rigid pavement runway measuring 1,200 meters by 33 meters wide, a platform of 4,440 m², and improvements to the taxiway and fencing.
These interventions will not only optimize air operations but also serve as a catalyst for the economic and social development of the municipality, home to over 85,000 residents.
According to Sergio París Mendoza, director-general of the Civil Aeronautics Authority, this project is key to connecting Cumaribo with the rest of the country: “We are starting the transformation toward tourism, enabling the departure and connection of Colombians to Cumaribo, and from Cumaribo to Colombia,” said París.
The mayor of Cumaribo, Armel Caracas, emphasized that these works represent an opportunity to showcase the natural and cultural riches of the region, which includes iconic sites like El Tuparro National Park.

Meanwhile, the La Primavera airport will also undergo significant interventions. With an investment close to COP 66 billion (~USD 16 million), a new terminal will be built, and the runway will be improved, enhancing air connectivity for this region in Vichada.
Both projects are part of the Social Airports strategy, a flagship initiative of President Gustavo Petro’s government, aimed at improving airport infrastructure in historically underserved areas like Vichada, Guainía, Chocó, Nariño, and La Guajira. With investments exceeding COP 377 billion (USD 85.5 million), this initiative seeks to foster air connectivity, boost tourism, and stimulate local economies.
The projected infrastructure at these two airports will not only facilitate air transport but also open the door to greater economic development in regions known for their cultural and natural wealth. For Vichada, this initiative promises to bridge distances with the rest of the country and position the region as an attractive destination for tourism and investment.

Aeronautics Authority Launches $85 Million Social Airports Strategy in Colombia

<a href="https://wpremiumlounge.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">W Premium Group</a> inaugurated this week a VIP lounge at the Comandante Armando Tola International Airport in El Calafate, located in the province of Santa Cruz, near the famous Perito Moreno glacier.
The El Calafate lounge is the second VIP lounge the company has opened in Argentina, following the one in Ushuaia in September. A third lounge is set to open soon at the Trelew airport, also in Patagonia.

The new lounge at El Calafate airport, with a capacity for 40 guests, is located in the pre-boarding area (upper floor) between gates 3 and 4. It can be accessed with Dragon Pass, Visa Airport Companion, Priority Pass, LoungeKey, Mile On Air, or W Pass.

During the peak summer season, the flight schedule to El Calafate includes an average of 140 weekly operations (arrivals and departures), connecting it to Buenos Aires (Aeroparque and Ezeiza), Bariloche, Córdoba, Trelew, Ushuaia, Perito Moreno, Comodoro Rivadavia, Río Gallegos, Río Grande, and Santiago de Chile. This represents a monthly offering of over 100,000 seats provided by Aerolíneas Argentinas, Flybondi, JetSMART, LADE, and SKY Airline.

Between January and October 2024, El Calafate airport handled 686,000 passengers, a figure 2% higher than the same period last year. This positions it as the tenth busiest airport in Argentina.

El Calafate Airport Welcomes New W Lounge: A Boost for VIP Travelers

The Government of Paraná reaffirmed it&#8217;s support for the construction of a new runway at Afonso Pena International Airport, located in São José dos Pinhais, in the metropolitan area of Curitiba. During a public hearing held on November 21, 2024, at the São José dos Pinhais City Council, the state government detailed the complementary works it will carry out, with an investment of R$ 200 million (~ USD 34 million). These works include the construction of roundabouts, road adjustments, and signage.
The new runway, which will be the longest in Paraná at 3,000 meters in length (surpassing the current 2,100-meter runway), is included in the concession contract for the South Block with the company CCR, which is responsible for the airport&#8217;s administration. The works are expected to be completed by December 31, 2026, according to our Brazilian partner outlet, <a href="https://aeroin.net/parana-reafirma-compromisso-de-construir-terceira-pista-no-aeroporto-internacional-de-curitiba/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AEROIN</a>.
This expansion, the government noted, will enable the airport to operate direct long-haul flights to destinations in the United States and Europe, boosting tourism, business, and cargo sectors. It will also facilitate simultaneous operations and provide redundancy in airport infrastructure.
The Secretary of State for Planning, Guto Silva, mentioned that this expansion is part of a strategic plan by the state government aimed at strengthening local tourism and business activities, complemented by projects such as the new convention center in Curitiba.
In 2023, Curitiba Airport handled 5.65 million passengers, a figure 14% higher than the previous year, ranking it 12th among the busiest airports in Brazil.
