Once again demonstrating its adaptability to the challenging times Ukraine is facing after two years of Russian invasion, SkyUp Airlines passed the audit for obtaining the IOSA certification, acronym for IATA Operational Safety Audit, an internationally recognized evaluation system established by IATA, whose purpose is to comprehensively oversee the safety of operations and their respective controls.
This agreement opens new possibilities for expansion for SkyUp in the global ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance leasing) contracts market, the way the company has found to keep operating after all commercial flights were suspended in Ukraine.
«SkyUp Airlines is gradually strengthening its position in the global transportation market through ACMI agreements. IOSA registration is a crucial milestone for us and sends a positive message to potential partners. We aim to demonstrate that cooperation with us is secure, reliable, and profitable,» said Dmytro Sieroukhov, CEO of SkyUp.
«Last year, SkyUp Airlines was among the top 20 airlines in Europe that concluded the most ACMI contracts, according to the specialized publication ch-aviation. This year, we aspire to reach new heights and are determined, open to partnerships, and never settle for what we have achieved,» he added.
In an <a href="http://aviacionline.com/2023/05/running-an-airline-during-a-war-a-qa-with-skyups-cco-lyudmila-slobodyanyuk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview granted to Aviacionline in June last year</a>, the CCO of SkyUp Airlines, Lyudmila Slobodyanyuk, had detailed that since February 2022, they have closed agreements with Air Albania, Air Moldova, Corendon, Corendon Europe, ETF Airways, FlyOne, Freebird Airlines, Marabu, Smartwings, SunAir, Tailwind, Tunisair, WizzAir Abu Dhabi, WizzAir Hungary, and WizzAir Malta.
This has allowed the airline to take care of its finances and keep its 1,200 employees. Together with its subsidiary in Malta, SkyUp has a fleet of two Boeing 737-700s and seven Boeing 737-800s.
«Looking ahead to the next five years, we see SkyUp as a thriving participant in the European market, with a diversified business model. This hybrid approach will combine regular and charter flights, covering approximately 70 routes in the first years. Our goal is to reach a passenger volume of 2 million per year in the next two years,» Slobodyanyuk had commented.

SkyUp Airlines Overcomes Adversity with Successful IOSA Certification Amidst Ukrainian Crisis

SkyUp MT &#8212; the Maltese business unit of Ukrainian airline SkyUp &#8212; has been allocated slots in Warsaw&#8217;s Chopin airport for the Summer 2024 season. The information was revealed on the airport’s Initial Coordination Report for the season, <a href="https://www.acl-uk.org/latest-airport-info/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">made available by slot coordinator ACL</a>.
The airline, which currently operates two aircraft on ACMI and charter flights, has stated during the course of the year that it intends to start its own regular operations by 2024. <a href="https://skyup.aero/en/news/brend-skyup-teper-oficijno-predstavlenij-u-yes_459" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Its Maltese air operator certificate (AOC) was granted in May</a>. As Malta is a member of the European Union, a local AOC gives SkyUp almost limitless possibilities when flying from two points within the Union.
According to the ACL report, the airline was granted 838 movements in the airport for the IATA S24 season (versus zero in the same period of 2023). A slot allocation does not necessarily mean the airline will make use of it, although having the slot is generally required for a flight to happen.
The airline was also allocated 478 movements in Poznań, also in Poland, according to that airport&#8217;s Initial Coordination Report.
And although the destinations in the report are only indicative, the report says SkyUp MT intends to use the slots in Warsaw to serve eight destinations (map below).

Additionally, as two of the destinations are not included in the European Common Aviation Area agreement, it is likely that some of SkyUp MT&#8217;s operations could remain as charter flights. This was a possibility that was mentioned by SkyUp&#8217;s General Director, Dmytro Seroukhov, <a href="https://en.interfax.com.ua/news/interview/941089.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in an interview to Interfax-Ukraine in October</a>.
«The same plane, for example, flies three times a day. But one flight will be chartered, one regular, and one more at all like we will take the football team somewhere for meetings or training. This is our hybridity», said Seroukhov when discussing future operations within the European Union.
Back then, the executive said he expected flights «realistically» to begin from the end of April 2024, with a particular focus on «tourist destinations».
While SkyUp MT has currently one Boeing 737-700 and one 737-800, <a href="https://www.planespotters.net/airline/SkyUp-Europe" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Planespotters.net</a>, SkyUp Airlines &#8212; the Ukrainian AOC &#8212; operates <a href="https://www.planespotters.net/airline/SkyUp-Airlines" target="_blank" rel="noopener">two 737-700 and six 737-800</a>.

SkyUp MT is allocated slots in Warsaw/Chopin Airport for Summer 2024

The Ukrainian airline SkyUp has achieved a significant milestone by securing approval to operate on US soil. This permission was granted through the foreign airline certificate FAR129.
SkyUp&#8217;s CEO, Dmytro Seroukhov, thanked the company team for their professional approach and commitment in achieving results. Furthermore, he emphasized the trust and opportunity given by the US authorities to operate in their country.

The SkyUp fleet that received authorization to fly in US airspace consists of four Boeing 737-800 aircraft: UR-SQB, UR-SQC, UR-SQF, and UR-SQP.
This certification involves approval from the Department of Transportation (permission to conduct business as an air carrier on US soil), TSA approval (meeting aviation security requirements for air transport to or from the US), and FAA approval (Part 129 Operations Specifications).
As part of its strategy in the new US market, the airline plans to develop ACMI (Wet-leasing) services and charter flights.

Ukrainian airline SkyUp obtains permission to operate flights in the USA

<a href="http://aviacionline.com/2023/06/ryanair-volara-entre-barcelona-y-cork/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ryanair</a> presents its plan for rebuilding Ukraine&#8217;s aviation industry following the conflict with Russia. In a meeting with Ukraine&#8217;s Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration and the Minister of Infrastructure, Oleksandr Kubrakov, the company proposes a investment of over $3 billion to revitalize the sector.
The low-cost airline visited the country&#8217;s main airports, Kiev, Lviv, and Odesa, where the management team led by Michael O&#8217;Leary met with the administrators. Particular attention was paid to Boryspil International Airport, which extended the invitation to Ryanair. During the visit, they thoroughly inspected the facilities, noting what they defined as the «excellent condition of the airport infrastructure and its full operational readiness to resume flights when safe.»
«Ryanair remains a committed partner in rebuilding and investing in Ukraine aviation. Today we saw that in the most difficult conditions of war, the Boryspil airport team demonstrates its professionalism and is fully ready for the resumption of flights as soon as possible,» expressed in Kiev Michael O&#8217;Leary, CEO of the Ryanair Group.
In addition, he added: «Ryanair was Ukraine’s 2nd largest airline before the unlawful Russian invasion in Feb 2022. Once the skies over Ukraine have reopened for commercial aviation, Ryanair will charge back into Ukraine linking the main Ukraine airports with over 20 EU capitals, and we are working closely with the Ukrainian Govt to rebuild Ukraine’s aviation, industry and its economy.»

Ryanair&#8217;s plan includes operating 600 weekly flights from the airports in Kiev, Lviv, and Odesa, in addition to establishing domestic routes between these cities. The airline plans to offer more than 5 million seats originating or terminating in Ukraine in the first 12 post-war months, increasing to 10 million in 5 years. To carry out this ambitious operation, the company will base 30 Boeing 737 MAX in the country, an investment exceeding $3 billion that will significantly strengthen Ukrainian air capacity.
Oleksandr Kubrakov, Ukraine&#8217;s Minister of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development, noted: «Maintaining the operability of the aviation infrastructure and personnel vocational skills remains vital for us in the conditions of war. Meanwhile, the resumption of flights will be possible as soon as the security situation allows.»
«However, we are already working on solutions and investment plans to enable aircraft to fly up quickly. I am grateful for the leadership in the recovery of our aviation industry, for the specific proposals and decisions of Ryanair, a loyal partner of Ukraine,» Kubrakov concluded.

Ukraine: Ryanair Pledges $3 Billion Investment to Rebuild Post-War Commercial Aviation

An Iranian court has issued a final decision in the case of the downed Boeing 737-800 of Ukraine International Airlines in 2020. The announcement was made this Monday by the official representative of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Kanani Chafi, as reported by our affiliated media <a href="https://aeroin.net/tribunal-iraniano-emite-decisao-final-sobre-caso-de-aviao-ucraniano-derrubado-por-missil/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aeroin</a>.
«Given that this accident occurred on Iranian territory, the court thoroughly studied the case and made a final decision on the 10 officials responsible for this accident,» the diplomat told the Iranian news agency Tasnim.
In April, IRNA reported that an Iranian court issued a guilty verdict against 10 military personnel. The commander of the Tor M-1 anti-aircraft missile system was sentenced to 13 years in prison, and the other 9 defendants in the case, including military personnel from the Tor M-1 crew and representatives from the Regional Operations Control Center in Tehran, received prison sentences of 1.5 to 3 years. According to the court ruling, they must pay compensation to the families of the victims for each deceased.
The Ukraine International flight PS-752 crashed shortly after taking off from Tehran&#8217;s airport to Kiev on January 8, 2020. Among the 176 dead were citizens from Afghanistan, Great Britain, Germany, Iran, Canada, Ukraine, and Sweden, which caused its respective governments to intervene. The Iranian military announced that they shot down a Boeing flying near a military installation by mistake, confusing the plane with an «enemy target».
Tehran handed over to Kiev a draft technical report on the causes of the accident, admitting that it was a human error. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmitry Kuleba, described it as an attempt to hide the true causes of the disaster.
Ukrainian officials also analyzed the flight pattern of the airplane and determined that it had stayed within the established corridor for civil flights from Imam Khomeini International Airport.

Iranian tribunal releases final ruling on Ukraine Boeing 737-800 missile strike case

Kyiv-based SkyUp has has seen enough crisis scenarios during its five-year history; first, the COVID-19 pandemic, which made demand collapse. Then, a war which has kept the Ukrainian airspace closed since February 2022.
Originally designed as a low-cost carrier, the model could get through a pandemic despite reduced demand, but the war naturally interrupted everything. Now, SkyUp&#8217;s fleet operates ACMI contracts (wet lease, where another airline hires their aircraft with crew) around the world.
Aviacionline had the opportunity to have a Q&amp;A, via e-mail, with SkyUp&#8217;s Chief Commercial Officer, Lyudmila Slobodyanyuk.
The interview was edited for clarity.
What was SkyUp&#8217;s financial and commercial position on February 23, 2022? It must have been two intense years after the pandemic.
As a newly established airline, we embarked on our journey in 2022 and achieved significant milestones within our three-year history. We were proud to announce that we have successfully served a total of 2.55 million passengers during this short period.
Furthermore, according to UkSATSE (Ukrainian State Air Traffic Services Enterprise), we ranked second among Ukrainian airlines in terms of the number of flights conducted in the Ukrainian airspace in 2021. This recognition highlights our commitment to providing efficient and reliable air travel services to our valued customers.
We didn&#8217;t actually stop in 2020, in the midst of a pandemic, travel restrictions, and border shutdowns:
<ul>
<li>evacuated Ukrainians from Wuhan (China);</li>
<li>during the first week of the lockdown, operated more than 100 special flights to 30 countries around the world to enable Ukrainians and foreign citizens with a residence permit in Ukraine to return home. In total, 18,500 passengers returned to Ukraine on these flights;</li>
<li>diversified our operations: converted 7 aircraft to cargo planes and later continued to transport cargo in special compartments of passenger aircraft. In total, in 2020-2021, we transported 2,410.5 tons of cargo.</li>
</ul>
 Then, February 24th happened. What was the first thing you did once you got to the office on that day?
I found myself on a business trip abroad when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. On that fateful day, I had important meetings scheduled with airport authorities. However, our immediate priority became ensuring the safety and well-being of our entire team, consisting of approximately 1,200 individuals.
Without wasting any time, we initiated a comprehensive check to confirm the safety and location of each team member. We assessed their needs and determined how we could provide assistance during this crisis.
Within a week, we had already formulated plans for evacuation flights. Over the next few months, we conducted numerous flights, transporting Ukrainians to destinations such as Israel and Portugal. Additionally, we organized the evacuation of our team members to Turkey. To facilitate these operations, we successfully negotiated with Moldova&#8217;s authorities to reopen their airport, which had initially closed its airspace due to the full-scale war.
In our commitment to aid those affected by the conflict, we established partnerships with organizations such as the United Nations and other non-governmental organizations. On our return flights to Moldova, we utilized our aircraft to transport essential humanitarian aid destined for Ukraine.
The situation remains challenging, but we are determined to provide support and assistance wherever possible. Our focus on collaboration, both within our team and with external organizations, reflects our unwavering dedication to helping those affected by the ongoing crisis.
 Apart from the chaos it must have been outside the office, there was still a company to run. At the time, how did the evacuation go &#8212; and how many aircraft were already outside the country?
Approximately a month prior to the invasion by Russia, we took proactive measures to safeguard our fleet. In collaboration with lessors and insurance companies, we devised a meticulously planned flight schedule aimed at minimizing the time our aircraft spent in Ukraine. Through this innovative approach, we ensured that, at the time when the Ukrainian airspace was closed for civil aviation, 10 out of our 11 planes were strategically positioned abroad.
However, one lone aircraft remained within Ukrainian airspace at the time of the airspace closure and was subsequently compelled to return to Boryspil airport in compliance with the NOTAM (Notice to Airmen). Fortunately, we were able to execute the evacuation of this aircraft in April 2023 and this unit has started successful operation after the involuntary interruption and proper maintenance done.
 SkyUp&#8217;s entire fleet is leased. Did any of the lessors (or insurers) asked for their aircraft to be returned? How did you manage the payment of leases and debt once all revenue stopped? 
Our fleet is leased. Since the full-scale war began we didn&#8217;t have any unresolved issues with our lessors and partners. We have long-standing relationships with our partners, and they find us as reliable partners fulfilling commitments no matter what, therefore any questions that may arise are considered together to find a win-win solution.
Furthermore, we added our fleet with a new aircraft in summer 2022 and will continue the fleet expansion.
 After the initial shock, how did you manage to close your first ACMI deal?
We concluded our first ACMI contract with Air Moldova. The first two months after the invasion, one of our aircraft was actively involved in evacuation flights and based in Chisinau airport, so at the same time we&#8217;re negotiating about following engagement of the plane into ACMI deals as we&#8217;re able to provide the plane for work almost immediately.
Since 24 February, we have cooperated with 15 airlines: Air Albania, Air Moldova, Corendon, Corendon Europe, ETF Airways, FlyOne, Freebird Airlines, Marabu, Smartwings, SunAir, Tailwind, Tunisair, WizzAir Abu Dhabi, WizzAir Hungary, and WizzAir Malta.
 Right now, most of the fleet is committed to ACMI deals &#8212; and to your parent company. But is the majority of the office activities still going on in Ukraine?
Referring to the «parent company» is not entirely accurate. The establishment of SkyUp [Malta], the European company, has propelled the SkyUp brand with its Ukrainian DNA to an international level. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone in Ukrainian aviation history, as we are among the pioneers in achieving such a feat. Notably, obtaining the European operator&#8217;s license enables us to enhance our regular flight services.
Presently, our primary focus lies in ACMI services. However, we also provide charter flights for tour operators as well as the specialized flights for Ukrainian and international foundations, NGOs, professional associations, etc. Additionally, we have plans to revitalize our cargo operations on passenger flights.
 Is SkyUp already breaking even?
Through our ongoing operational endeavors, we have managed to retain our team of 1,200 individuals and sustain a business that has encountered a temporary setback. Despite the challenges, we have diligently fulfilled our tax obligations, having already contributed more than UAH 165 million since the commencement of the extensive invasion. Additionally, we have remained committed to honoring our responsibilities to partners and passengers.
 In college, one learns about running a company in «normal» times or perhaps to endure a crisis &#8212; but nothing like a war. How is SkyUp coping with financing in a war economy &#8212; is access to capital markets possible and, if not, how do you manage?
The field of civil aviation is characterized by its dynamic and demanding nature, making crises a regular part of our operations. We must always be prepared for various scenarios, including the unexpected, such as the outbreak of war. While some of us may have been reluctant to believe it until the last moment, we were aware that the possibility existed, and we made preparations accordingly.
When the full-scale war commenced, the most challenging aspect was managing the emotional response to the situation and maintaining the team&#8217;s morale amidst uncertainty and the unpredictable nature of unfolding events. Providing individuals with routine tasks became crucial during such uncertain times, as routine acts as a stabilizing force, offering hope and strength to endure.
Our people are our utmost priority and greatest asset. It is the dedication and passion of our team that upholds the company and propels it forward. Their unwavering commitment and love for what they do are the driving forces behind our progress.
 Last year, you also opened a branch in Malta. What will be the scope of this venture? That is, what will it do that SkyUp Ukraine currently does not &#8212; and why adding complexity to the operation?
Last year, we only started to work on founding a European company. SkyUp MT airline has received an Air Operator Certificate (AOC), Continuing Airworthiness Management Organization certificate (CAMO), and an Air Operator License (AOL) in May 2023.
Contrary to common belief, establishing a company in the European Union (EU) in today&#8217;s circumstances brings  simplification rather than added complexity. It opens up a multitude of opportunities that were previously inaccessible to us as a non-EU Ukrainian company. The establishment of SkyUp MT allows us to operate as an EU resident, enabling us to expand our range of services, including the introduction of regular flights.
Regarding organizational structure, it is true that there may be increased complexity. However, when considering the sociopolitical complexities that currently significantly impact our business, our move into the EU market has actually helped eliminate unnecessary complications that hindered our progress.
 Beyond ACMI: is SkyUp planning for regular operations in Europe? 
We are actively engaged in the process, diligently exploring various possibilities, developing a comprehensive flight program, and undertaking all necessary preparations to commence sales and orchestrate flights. Our goal is to open sales for our regular flights within this year.
 Is growth in later 2023 and 2024 on the cards for SkyUp? 
We have strategic plans to broaden our fleet, despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which presents challenges in maintaining both our team and business operations when our domestic market is inaccessible. Additionally, the economic burden of the war continues to mount, necessitating the acquisition of additional resources to ensure our survival.
 Just recently you apparently lost a plane in Khartoum. Is everyone fine there and, if so, how will you recover them and the other 737 that remained seemingly untouched?
We actually can say about the unequivocal significant damage and probable loss of two aircraft based on the available evidence, and that all relevant evidence has been submitted for further analysis to the competent organizations, insurance companies, aircraft owners.
All 36 SkyUp employees were successfully evacuated from Sudan. It was a complex multi-stage operation under the supervision of the airline&#8217;s crisis center and representatives of government agencies, as well as with the informational support of international partners.
 Is SkyUp making plans for a post-war Ukraine (and is it reasonable to do so)?

 Where do you see SkyUp in five years? And where do you see it in ten years?
In 2018 SkyUp started its operations with only 2 aircraft and one charter destination but a long-term strategic intention to enter the European market was our beacon since the beginning. However, no one could have imagined those days that we would have to start operations in Europe in such circumstances as a full-scale war.
Despite the ongoing war, we proudly commemorated our fifth anniversary on May 21, standing strong as an operational entity. We have expanded our horizons by establishing the SkyUp brand internationally, venturing into the European market, and successfully launching our European company.
Since our inaugural flight, we have been instrumental in transforming the perception of Ukrainian aviation. By offering classic carrier high-quality services at affordable low-cost prices, we have revolutionized the industry. Our commitment to expanding route options has been unwavering, with over 90 routes opened in just one year. It is our steadfast mission to connect Ukrainians with the world and showcase Ukraine to a global audience, a mission we will tirelessly pursue.
We shattered stereotypes and challenged aviation standards when we put an end to heels and pencil skirts for our flight attendants and replaced it with white sneakers, a loose orange suit, and white t-shirts.
Looking ahead to the next five years, we envision SkyUp as a thriving participant in the European market, boasting a diversified business model. This hybrid approach will combine both regular and charter flights, encompassing approximately 70 routes in the first years. Our target is to achieve a passenger turnover of 2 million per year within the next two years.

Running an airline during a war: a Q&A with SkyUp’s CCO, Lyudmila Slobodyanyuk

Ukrainian carrier SkyUp received its Air Operator&#8217;s Certificate (AOC) and Air Operator&#8217;s Licence (AOL) in Malta on 5 May. This is the first time that the company has official representation in a member state of the European Union.
According to the company&#8217;s own press release, the certificate will allow it to effectively fulfil its lease agreements, expand its operations in the European Union countries and plan the opening of new air routes in the continent in the future.

<h3>SkyUp receives its operator&#8217;s certificate in Malta and registers its first aircraft</h3>
«SkyUp brand with Ukrainian DNA is international now», noted Oleksandr Alba, co-owner of the company. «We are one of the first to do so in the history of Ukrainian aviation», he remarked. He also stated that from now on the company will have new opportunities to expand its business.
Alba said: «Our ambitious goal is to show the whole world that Ukrainian brands can compete with European ones, and in the long run, be recognized as the best in Europe and the world thanks to a special service».
«Ukrainian brand SkyUp, which has changed Ukrainian civil aviation during the five years of operation, is now also available in European Union countries as well», said Dmytro Seroukhov, CEO at SkyUp Airlines and and Accountable Manager at SkyUp MT.
«SkyUp MT team is sincerely grateful to the Civil Aviation Directorate Malta for the professional approach, openness and the provided opportunity to fully work in the European Union market», Seroukhov added.
SkyUp MT has already registered its first aircraft. It is a twelve-year-old, 189-seats Boeing 737-800 with Maltese registration number 9H-SAU. It was previously based in Ukraine. The company expects to take delivery of more aircraft by the end of 2023, although these would come on the basis of new contracts.
<h4>To continue in spite of everything</h4>
Since the beginning of the war following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the company has had to adapt its model to try to survive the total suspension of scheduled commercial flights in the country.
During the first days and weeks of the conflict, SkyUp flew Ukrainian citizens to Israel and Portugal from Chisinau, Moldova, and from the Polish cities of Warsaw and Lublin. It also helped transport international humanitarian aid to airports near the Ukrainian border.
It then offered aircraft and crew leasing services to other airlines outside Ukraine on wet-lease agreements and operated for the tour operator Join UP!, a commercial partner of the airline.
With the country&#8217;s airports still closed and airspace restricted for civil operations, the provision of services outside Ukraine remainsas one of the most viable options for generating revenue. Of course, the desire of the company&#8217;s employees and management is to return to operating on Ukrainian soil.

Ukrainian carrier SkyUp obtains its Air Operator’s Certificate in Malta

On the night of April 4th, several users reported that a Boeing 737 was leaving Ukrainian airspace, which is currently closed to civil traffic due to the Russian invasion.
The aircraft in question is a Boeing 737-800 with registration UR-SQP, owned by the low-cost carrier SkyUp, stranded for over a year in Kiev. The plane attempted to be evacuated from Kiev as the conflict escalated, but on the night of February 24th, 2022, while climbing towards Chisinau, Moldova, the Boeing 737 had to return due to the danger of the moment.
Now, a year and two months later, the airline successfully managed to evacuate the UR-SQP. According to the Ukrainian media outlet <a href="https://www.avianews.com/ukraine/2023/04/04/skyup_rescued_last_737_from_kyiv_boryspil_airport/">Avianews</a>, the Boeing 737 left «stealthily» from Kiev-Boryspil Airport, where many other aircraft are still stranded. To avoid suspicion, it did not turn on its transponder for most of the journey until it crossed the border. Its final destination was Iasi, Romania.
A Sky Up spokesperson confirmed the rescue of UR-SQP to Aviacionline.

<h3>Complex situation in Ukraine to evacuate airplanes</h3>
In an interview with a Ukrainian media outlet, SkyUp CEO Dmytro Seroukhov said that the evacuation of the Boeing was hindered by the lack of insurance coverage and Ukraine&#8217;s defense systems, where Russia fires missiles daily.
Avianews reported that, so far, only two additional civilian planes have been evacuated: in April 2022, a Windrose ATR 72 flew from Lviv and, in September, Wizz Air flew an Airbus A320. On the other hand, Turkey also managed to rescue its two Airbus A400s stranded in Kiev-Boryspil in December 2022.
However, dozens of planes are still trapped in various airports in Ukraine, including models such as Boeing 737, Boeing 757, Boeing 767, Boeing 777, Airbus A320, A321, Embraer 190, MD83, ERJ 145, ATR 42/72, Antonov 145/158, and Saab 340 from different airlines such as Ukraine International Airlines (UIA), Wizz Air, Windrose, and Azur Air, among others.

<h2>SkyUp Continues Flying Despite Not Being in Ukraine</h2>
SkyUp continues flying, but outside of Ukraine, with other types of operations. They are currently active as a provider of charter flights and crewed aircraft lease (ACMI) for various European companies. 
In 2022, the company transported more than one million passengers under lease contracts with other airlines, in addition to charter flights for tour operators in Moldova and the Baltic countries, state and non-state specialized organizations, charitable foundations, etc.

Their fleet consists of ten Boeing 737-800s and two Boeing 737-700s. During the summer of 2022, they opened a maintenance line in Antalya (Turkey) and Tallinn (Estonia).
Part of their revenue is redirected to the government of Ukraine to cover the costs of the war. In turn, 53 of their more than 1,200 employees joined the Ukrainian Air Force. They also continue to perform evacuation and humanitarian flights for the country.

SkyUp Airlines Successfully Evacuates Stranded Boeing 737 from War-Torn Ukraine

Ukrainian low-cost airline SkyUp has partnered with fundraising platform United24, an initiative launched in May this year by Volodymyr Zelenskyy that aims to support Ukraine and collect donations for defence, humanitarian and medical assistance, and reconstruction of war-affected areas of the territory.
Based on the agreement, SkyUp created a brand image with the United24 logo, which is already used on its Boeing 737-800 with registration UR-SQM. The design includes the incorporation of QR codes, both on the exterior of the aircraft and in the cabin seat pockets. Passengers can use them to learn more about the initiative and contribute money towards the purchase of first aid kits for Ukrainian soldiers.
The fundraiser has been running since last 1 November and will continue until 1 February 2023. In addition, those wishing to help remotely can contribute a sum of money via the <a href="https://donorbox.org/skyup" target="_blank" rel="noopener">joint SkyUp and United24 portal</a>.

SkyUp and United24 raise funds for Ukrainian soldiers

Ukrainian low-cost carrier <a href="https://skyup.aero/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SkyUp Airlines</a> took delivery of a new Boeing 737-800 on Tuesday, becoming the tenth aircraft of this type to join its fleet.
The airplane, with manufacturer&#8217;s serial number (MSN) 40249, completed its first flight in July 2011. From August of that year it operated for FlyDubai and in 2019 it joined the fleet of South African carrier Comair. Now, it is registered as UR-SQM so it can start flying for its new operator.
The aircraft is equipped with winglets, which will be replaced by split scimitar winglets during the coming autumn. The new wing devices will improve the aircraft&#8217;s aerodynamic performance and enable a further reduction in fuel consumption. Consequently, they contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
With the new acquisition, SkyUp has two Boeing 737-700s and ten 737-800s in operation. The aircraft are configured in a single-class cabin disposal and can carry up to 149 and 189 passengers, respectively.

To continue in spite of everything: Ukrainian airline SkyUp takes delivery of a new Boeing 737-800

Antonov Airlines, a company specialized in the transport of heavy materials, successfully completed three flights of its An-124-100s in cooperation with Chapman Freeborn Germany. The purpose of the operations was to transport a new mobile gas-fired power plant generator and associated equipment between Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia, and Kano, in northern Nigeria.
The transport of a generator, a turbine and additional equipment marked the conclusion of a year-long cooperation project. Each Antonov 124-100 can carry up to 150 tons of paid cargo on each operation. The total cargo carried on the flights to Nigeria was about 200 tons.
«The entire Antonov team, from commercial to operational, route planning, and load planning worked closely with our client and agents to ensure the safe delivery of this important cargo, which will support energy needs in Nigeria», commented Eugene Kiva, Antonov&#8217;s Commercial Executive.
Antonov emphasized the continuity of its operations despite the ongoing war in the territory of the Eastern European country. The Ukranian company «continues to fly worldwide, prioritising flights for the Ukrainian government, the Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS), and humanitarian missions».
«We continue to operate despite the challenges we have faced after russian invasion and the damage they caused to our Gostomel home base and some of our aircraft», said Ievgen Gavrylov, Antonov&#8217;s Acting Director Genera. He also remarked that the planning and maintenance areas were temporarily relocated to Leipzig, Germany, to ensure the continuation of safe operations.

War in Ukraine: despite difficulties, Antonov continues cargo transport operations

Turkey&#8217;s Tailwind Airlines decided to financially assist Ukrainian low-cost carrier SkyUp and received on wet lease one of its Boeing 737-800s, with which it will operate charter flights from Antalya to the Baltic countries.
<a href="https://aeroin.net/ucraniana-skyup-se-vira-como-pode-em-meio-a-guerra-e-aluga-mais-um-boeing-737/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to our media partner Aeroin</a>, Tailwind Airlines CEO Mehmet Bostan confirmed to ch-aviation that the wet-lease has been contracted until October 31, 2022. Currently, the Turkish airline&#8217;s fleet consists solely of previous-generation 737 aircraft, with a total of five Boeing 737-400s.
Like Ukraine&#8217;s largest carrier Ukraine International Airlines, SkyUp is also looking for ways to generate revenue at a time when its country&#8217;s airports are closed (or destroyed) and airspace remains off-limits to civilian flights due to the Russian invasion that began on February 24. Chartering aircraft out of Ukraine is one such way to raise money to pay the team.
<a href="http://aviacionline.com/2022/05/airbaltic-to-hire-120-new-pilots/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">airBaltic</a> announced in early May that it signed a wet lease agreement with Ukraine International Airlines for a Boeing 737-900ER, which was reinstated into commercial service with the Latvian carrier.  Ukraine International Airlines has 12 Boeing 737-800s, four 737-900s, five Embraer E190s, two E195s and two Boeing 767-300s.
In addition to the aircraft leased to Tailwind, SkyUp delivered three others to Corendon Europe (the Maltese subsidiary of the Turkish parent), and one to Air Moldova. The Ukrainian operator told Polish newspaper Rynek Lotniczy that due to leasing and charter contracts, including humanitarian cargo operations, about 40% of its staff is currently on active duty.

Surviving the war: SkyUp leases its aircraft to foreign operators

Through a partnership agreement with UkrPoshta, the official postal service of Ukraine, airBaltic has established a multimodal logistics bridge between Kiev and Riga to enable mail distribution.
Mail is transported to Riga Airport (RIX) by truck, where it is loaded onto airBaltic flights to more than 70 destinations in Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia.
Since the first shipment was made on April 12, more than 7,000 bags of mail weighing 50 tons have already been transported.
«We are doing everything we can to help the Ukrainian nation. As a result, a regular Kyiv-Riga truck line now feeds <a href="https://www.airbaltic.com/en-ZZ/index">airBaltic&#8217;s</a> network of flights from Ukraine to major European hubs and beyond,» said Martin Gauss, CEO of the Latvian airline.
airBaltic operates a fleet consisting exclusively of Airbus A220-300 aircraft (34 in total with an average age of 2.8 years), although last week it added a Boeing 737-900 from Ukraine International Airlines on wet lease, also as a show of support for Ukraine.
Prior to the Russian invasion, airBaltic operated fourteen weekly flights to Ukraine: ten between Riga and Kiev; two between Riga and Odessa; and two between Vilnius and Kiev.

airBaltic: establishes a multimodal logistics bridge between Kiev and Riga

If the closure of airspace to airlines from Europe, the United States, and Canada by Russia was not enough (as a reciprocal measure), now the Eurasian giant has added that insurance companies are not willing to cover expenses over Russian territory. In addition, some companies report fuel shortages on several bases.
Many foreign airlines, specifically those operators based in the European Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, have stopped providing services to Russia due to the extensive airspace restrictions imposed in the wake of the country&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine.
Days prior to the conflict, insurers around the world have stopped writing some crucial types of insurance for companies with operations in Ukraine initially, which was then extended to Russia.
This decision seriously harms aircraft, which are at risk of unwanted government actions, including war, expropriation, and forced sales of assets. Indeed, the fear of expropriation has grown since Russia began dealing with the nationalization of more than 500 Western aircraft owned by various lessors.

The first airlines to suspend operations to Russia, without restrictions, were Azerbaijan Airlines and Buta Airways, both based in Baku, Azerbaijan.
These airlines had up to five daily flights between Baku and Astrakhan, Moscow/Domodedovo, Moscow/Vnukovo, Moscow/Zhukovsky, and Mineralnye Vody.
Today, Friday, it was joined by Kazakhstan-based Air Astana and Pegasus, Turkey&#8217;s leading low-cost carrier. Both carriers declared having problems with insurers, which will in principle keep operations suspended until the end of March.
The Kazakh company had four daily flights from Almaty, Karaganda, and Nur-Sultan to Moscow/Domodedovo, St. Petersburg, Omsk, and Novosibirsk. But the biggest loss with the Middle East and Asia, so far, goes to Pegasus. This one operated up to eight daily flights from Antalya and Sabiha Gokcen to Moscow/Domodedovo, Grozny, Krasnodar, Makhachkala, Mineralnye Vodu, and St. Petersburg.
By midweek, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines had joined the suspension of flights to Russia. This was after the Russia-based refueling service provider had informed them that they can no longer refuel their planes at the Moscow airport. Sanctions continue to choke Russia&#8217;s already weakened airline market. In turn, they have had consequences for the companies that operate the Asia-Europe corridor on a daily basis.
Sky Gate Airlines recently ceased operations. The company is based in Moscow but mostly operated between different cities in Europe and Asia. Its two Boeing 747-400 (F) aircraft were transferred to Azerbaijan-based Silkway Airlines.
Passenger and cargo airlines flying daily between Asia and Europe had to increase their total flight time by 20% to 35%, in some cases with intermediate stopovers.

Due to lack of insurance and refueling issues, some Asian airlines stop flying to Russia

Russia has been almost isolated from Western countries due to the closure of airspace and sanctions imposed on Russian airlines and companies; reciprocally, the Eurasian country imposed the same restrictions on the countries that have sanctioned it. Nevertheless, the international market is maintained mainly thanks to the enormous flow of connections with Turkey.
38 countries, mostly in Europe, Canada, and the United States, have banned the use of Russian airlines&#8217; airspace as part of sanctions packages.
In total, that represents a 29.2% drop in international seat supply for Russia. The country remains connected to Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
But, in the face of the connectivity crisis unleashed by the war between Russia and Ukraine, Turkey has quickly become the most used connecting route into or out of the Eurasian giant, thanks to the significant number of flights.
According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, Turkey is Russia&#8217;s main international market, accounting for 17.25% of flights and 18.3% of seat supply. It is a popular destination for Russian tourists, moving around 6 million travelers annually.
The United Arab Emirates is the second country with the second-largest seat supply with Russia, accounting for 13%, although it has less connectivity with America and Europe compared to Turkey.
In addition, Russia closed twelve airports in the Southeast (Rostov-on-Don (Platov), Krasnodar (Pashkovsky), Anapa (Vityazevo), Gelendzhik, Elista, Stavropol, Belgorod, Bryansk, Oriol, Kursk, Voronezh, and Simferopol), and the closure of the air space around them further reduced access and exit routes to the country.

<h4>Turkish Airlines, an important link for Russia</h4>
Turkey did not give any indication, nor did it put an eventual airspace closure on the table. In view of this, and taking advantage of the situation, Turkish Airlines modified a large part of its schedule, increasing the number of flights and the number of seats available.
<a href="https://www.turkishairlines.com/">The company</a> suspended flights to two Russian airports, Krasnodar and Rostov-on Don, in accordance with Russian restrictions. But it maintains flights to Moscow/Vnukovo (VKO), St. Petersburg (LED), Kazan (KZN), Sochi (AER), and Yekaterinburg (SVX). Usually, these destinations are operated by Airbus A320/A321 and Boeing 737.
In recent days, these destinations have increased their frequencies and replaced the aircraft with Airbus A330s, Boeing 787s and Boeing 777s.
<h4>The schedule is as follows:</h4>

<li>Moscow/Vnukovo (VKO), maintains the five daily flights but removes Airbus A321s from its schedule, and the route is operated on Boeing 777-300ER, Airbus A330-300, and Boeing 787-9.</li>
<li>St. Petersburg (LED); increases from fourteen to eighteen weekly flights; will be operated on Airbus A321ceo and Boeing 737-900ER, but some flights are scheduled with Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A330-300.</li>
<li>Kazan (KZN); increases from three to seven weekly flights; will be operated on Airbus A321ceo and Boeing 737-900ER.</li>
<li>Sochi (AER); maintains its four weekly flights on Boeing 737-900ER.</li>
<li>Ekaterinburg (SVX); increases from one to two weekly flights, replaces Airbus A319 with Airbus A321.</li>

The Turkish airline is one of the companies with the widest range of destinations worldwide. Taking into account its enormous presence in America and Europe, it is understandable the importance it has given to Russia once this country was sanctioned.
Other companies, such as Flydubai, Emirates, and Qatar Airways, have not made any changes to their flights to Russia, maintaining the same frequencies.
