The Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in Santiago de Chile handled 409,824 tons of cargo in 2024, marking a 14% increase compared to 2019 and a 1.5% rise from 2023. This growth is largely attributed to the surge in exports of salmon and cherries, which accounted for 61% and 28.3% of total exports, respectively.
The United States remained the top destination for Chilean exports, receiving 76.65% of shipments, followed by China (6.42%) and Japan (2.45%). This dominance underscores the strong demand for Chilean products, particularly in the food sector, within the U.S. market.
Passenger Traffic Hits Historic High
In addition to cargo growth, the Santiago airport achieved a record-breaking passenger volume in 2024, transporting 26,254,957 travelers. This figure represents a 12% increase from 2023 and a 6% rise compared to 2019. Of the total, 13.6 million passengers flew on domestic routes, while 11.3 million traveled internationally, with the latter segment experiencing the highest growth.
Positive Outlook for 2025
Looking ahead, cargo volume is projected to grow by 4% in 2025, surpassing 426,000 tons. This forecast is based on current export trends and the airport’s expanding role as a key logistics hub in the region.
