CIAC and Airbus to Conduct First Flight of SIRTAP with Colombian-Made Landing Gear
The design, the result of a strategic alliance between Colombia and Airbus, will undergo testing in Spain before production begins in Bogotá.
The Colombian Aeronautical Industry Corporation (CIAC) and Airbus plan to carry out the first flight of the High-Performance Remotely Piloted System (SIRTAP) in September of this year, featuring a landing gear manufactured in Colombia. The production of this component is taking place at CIAC's facilities in Bogotá.
The SIRTAP, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), will also be used by the Spanish Air and Army Forces. The landing gear, a critical component for takeoff, landing, and ground movement, is being developed as part of a strategic alliance between CIAC and Airbus, aimed at strengthening Colombia’s aerospace industry.
The prototype was presented by CIAC in collaboration with Airbus, following a design and manufacturing process that involved 11 engineers and nine highly skilled aeronautical technicians. These professionals received training from Airbus and spent two years developing the aircraft’s front and rear landing system.
After successfully passing structural resistance tests in Colombia, the prototype will be transferred to the Airbus facility in Getafe, Spain, where it will undergo further evaluations in extreme environmental conditions and braking tests.

According to Ana Catalina Cano Londoño, Deputy Minister for Veterans of the Social and Business Group for Defense (GSED), this project demonstrates the growth of Colombia’s aeronautical industry and its integration into the global logistics chain. Cano highlighted CIAC’s ability to design and manufacture complex aeronautical components, positioning it as a strategic partner in the sector.
“CIAC has worked tirelessly to grow Colombia’s aeronautical industry, placing it on the global aviation map and facilitating its entry into the global logistics chain. Its capability to design and manufacture highly complex aeronautical components, along with other key competencies, has made it a strategic partner for companies of Airbus’ caliber,” said Deputy Minister Cano.
