Controversy Over Access Roads Threatens Opening of New Jorge Chávez Airport
The comprehensive project evaluations are presented to determine whether there will be a new extension to the inauguration.
The access roads to the new Jorge Chávez International Airport are at the center of controversy after it was revealed that Provías Nacional awarded the Morales Duárez Avenue road project to a consortium that includes Fuertetupa, a company that was disqualified and fined S/16 million for irregularities in another road project on the same day the contract was signed. Additionally, El Comercio reported that the consortium’s representative has eight outstanding arrest warrants for aggravated theft.
Possible Delay in Airport Opening
If the airport's inauguration—scheduled for March 30—is postponed, it would be the third delay in the project. On March 13, authorities conducted a final comprehensive evaluation. Raúl Pérez Reyes, Minister of Transport and Communications, stated that the resulting report will be crucial in determining whether the facility meets the required safety standards.
Lima Airport Partners Claims Readiness, But Regulatory Concerns Remain
Lima Airport Partners (LAP), the airport concessionaire, insists that everything is on track to welcome passengers by the end of the month. However, Ositrán, the transport infrastructure regulator, warned that 0.6% of the project remains unfinished, including the integration of critical systems such as:
- Fire detection and alarm systems
- Public address (PA) systems
- Flight information display screens
- Lighting
These systems must be connected to the airport's central management platform before operations begin. Additionally, landscaping, cleaning, and terminal floor repairs are still in progress.
LAP: 100% Completion Not Necessary for Operation
Juan José Salmón, CEO of LAP, asserted that the airport will be fully operational by March 30, despite not being entirely finished.
"No infrastructure project starts at 100%," Salmón told Canal N, emphasizing that the 99.4% completion rate is sufficient for safe and efficient operations.
He confirmed that several key systems are already functional, including:
✅ Air conditioning
✅ Baggage handling system
✅ Information monitors
✅ PA system
However, Salmón acknowledged an outstanding issue with the fuel supply system, though he assured it will not impact operations or airport safety.
