Eletronuclear Receives Air Shipment for Angra 1 Maintenance at Cabo Frio International Airport
It was the first time that airport received two large aircraft on the same day.
On February 27, at Cabo Frio International Airport (RJ), Eletronuclear received two chartered flights carrying parts and equipment for the upcoming maintenance shutdown of the Angra 1 nuclear power plant.
According to AEROIN, a partner news outlet, a total of three Boeing 747-400F cargo planes from U.S.-based National Airlines transported approximately 90 tons of cargo from Miami, USA. The first flight landed on February 24.
A Historic Operation for Eletronuclear
Eletronuclear described the operation as unprecedented, with the cargo destined for Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro. After arriving in Cabo Frio, the equipment was transported by trucks from the Lagos Region to the Costa Verde. The total transportation cost amounted to R$8 million.
Due to the size and time constraints, the equipment was flown in chartered jets instead of being shipped by sea. The shipment included 3,900 parts distributed across 34 cargo volumes, including ten 20-foot containers. Westinghouse made the equipment available in mid-February, necessitating an expedited delivery for the scheduled maintenance in April.
“The Angra 1 maintenance shutdown will also be used to fulfill some of the conditions required for the plant’s 20-year license renewal. This is why we needed such a large and unprecedented operation. Employees from the technical department, as well as the International Logistics and Foreign Trade teams, participated in the process. This operation highlights the significance of the nuclear sector, which involves a vast network of service providers,” said Raúl Lycurgo, President of Eletronuclear.
Cabo Frio Airport Makes History
This marked the first time Cabo Frio International Airport received two large aircraft on the same day. Eduardo Valle, Chairman of the Board of Aeropart SA, the company managing the project, expressed pride in the airport’s role.
“The selection of Cabo Frio Airport, after a rigorous evaluation process, is a great honor for our entire team. We look forward to contributing to the success of this crucial energy sector project,” he said.
Angra 1 License Renewal and Modernization
In November 2023, the National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) approved the license renewal for Angra 1, extending its operation until December 2044. Future scheduled maintenance shutdowns will be used to gradually upgrade the plant, including:
- Modernizing instrumentation and control systems
- Replacing aging equipment
- Enhancing safety protocols
Brazil’s First Nuclear Power Plant
Angra 1, Brazil’s first commercial nuclear power plant, began operations in 1985. It features a pressurized water reactor (PWR), the most widely used nuclear reactor type worldwide. With a 640-megawatt capacity, Angra 1 generates enough electricity to power a city of two million people, supplying the national grid 24/7.
