Emirates Airline is set to increase its cabin refurbishment investment to $5 billion, up from the previously announced $4 billion, as delays in new aircraft deliveries—especially Boeing’s 777X program—continue to impact fleet expansion plans.
According to Reuters, Tim Clark, President of Emirates, confirmed that the airline will now modernize 220 aircraft, compared to the original 205-aircraft plan.
"We have no choice; this is the only way we can sustain and grow our network," Clark stated during the ITB tourism fair in Berlin this week.
He also emphasized the importance of taking control of the airline’s future:
"We had to take charge of our own destiny. We saw the challenges ahead and made a decision—and thank God we did," he told The National, Abu Dhabi.
No Boeing 777X Deliveries Expected in 2025
Clark expressed skepticism that 777X deliveries will begin in 2025, citing the ongoing certification process. Due to these delays, Emirates is actively exploring additional Airbus A350s and Boeing 777s to reinforce its fleet.
Emirates' Current Passenger Fleet
Emirates currently operates the following aircraft:
- 120 Boeing 777-300ERs (average age: 12 years)
- 118 Airbus A380s (9.6 years)
- 10 Boeing 777-200LRs (16.6 years)
- 3 Airbus A350-900s, with the first delivered in November 2024
Future Fleet and Expansion Plans
Emirates has a substantial aircraft order backlog, including:
- 170 Boeing 777-9s
- 62 Airbus A350-900s
- 35 Boeing 777-8s
- 15 Boeing 787-10s
- 15 Boeing 787-8s
However, with continued delays in deliveries, Emirates' best option for now is to extend the lifespan of its existing fleet and enhance the onboard experience.
