Eurowings replaces Airbus jets with Boeing 737 MAX in $5 billion fleet overhaul
The Lufthansa Group has announced the acquisition of 40 Boeing 737-8 MAX to modernize Eurowings’ fleet. With a $5 billion investment, the German leisure airline is aiming for a younger, more sustainable fleet while increasing seating capacity
The Lufthansa Group has decided to modernize the single-aisle aircraft fleet of Eurowings with the acquisition of 40 new Boeing 737-8 MAX. The gradual introduction of these models will position the German leisure airline as having one of the youngest fleets in the European market.
In December 2023, the German group placed an order for Boeing 737-8 MAX, which will be allocated to Eurowings. This order represents an investment of approximately five billion dollars at list prices, marking the most significant investment in sustainability in Eurowings' 30-plus-year history.
Eurowings has established itself as the largest leisure airline in Germany and is the leading carrier at airports such as Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart, and Cologne/Bonn. The new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft will replace Airbus A319's and older Airbus A320's. Each will feature a capacity of 189 seats, providing 39 additional seats compared to the A319.
"Economic success makes Eurowings attractive for investment. At the same time, we have the responsibility to reconcile economic and ecological matters. With 40 next-generation aircraft, we are laying the groundwork for a successful future for Eurowings, focused on ambitious sustainability goals," said Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings.
