For the Brazilian government, the merger between Gol and Azul would preserve more than 35,000 jobs
The Brazilian government will meet with the Administrative Council for Economic Defense to discuss the Gol-Azul merger, which could consolidate 60% of the domestic air market.
The Minister of Ports and Airports of Brazil, Silvio Costa Filho, expressed his support for the merger between Gol and Azul airlines, emphasizing that this move could be key to preserving two important assets that are facing financial difficulties and undergoing restructuring processes.
Costa Filho stated that the consolidation of the two companies could generate significant benefits for Brazilian aviation as a whole, although he clarified that the final decision on the merger rests with the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade). "The possibility of a merger between Gol and Azul is positive for strengthening aviation in Brazil, but Cade's decision must be respected," said the minister.
In the coming days, Costa Filho will meet with the president of Cade to discuss the situation, after having held meetings with the executives of both airlines. "We want to find a path that strengthens aviation in Brazil," the minister added after an event in São Paulo.
Additionally, Costa Filho emphasized that the merger could help preserve more than 35,000 direct jobs, not counting indirect ones, highlighting the importance of airlines for the Brazilian economy. "If any of these companies go bankrupt, it would severely impact the entire industrial services and tourism sector," he warned.
The proposed merger, which would result in an airline with approximately 60% of the domestic market, has raised concerns at LATAM Airlines, which fears a negative impact on competition and airfares. However, the Brazilian government continues to defend the merger as a strategic measure to stabilize the sector and ensure greater connectivity in Brazil.
