Haitian authorities claim that JetBlue and Spirit Airlines plan to resume their flights to the country
JetBlue and Spirit Airlines are exploring a potential return to Haiti with flights to Cap-Haïtien, according to Fritz Alphonse Jean, President of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT), following discussions with aviation authorities.
Haiti’s Office National de l’Aviation Civile (OFNAC) and the National Airport Authority (AAN) are still assessing the reopening of Port-au-Prince’s airport, which remains closed. The ongoing security crisis in the capital has significantly disrupted travel for Haitians. Aruba Airlines had proposed flights from Port-au-Prince to Miami but later withdrew the plan due to escalating gang violence.
Many Haitians argue that priority should be given to reopening Port-au-Prince’s airport, as access to Cap-Haïtien via major roads and highways has become increasingly difficult due to criminal group control. Spirit Airlines previously operated flights between Fort Lauderdale and Cap-Haïtien, but these were suspended for security reasons. The low-cost carrier told The Haitian Times it currently has no set date for resuming the route.
JetBlue, meanwhile, has extended its suspension of service to Port-au-Prince through June 11. The airline has not confirmed any plans to operate flights to Cap-Haïtien, despite President Fritz Alphonse Jean’s statements regarding the reopening of Toussaint Louverture International Airport. Skepticism remains high among Haitians due to the worsening security conditions.
While many prefer the reopening of Port-au-Prince, the potential return of JetBlue and Spirit Airlines to Cap-Haïtien would increase competition and potentially lower ticket prices. Both airlines offer extensive connections to U.S. destinations through their Fort Lauderdale hub.
