<a href="https://aviacionline.com/2024/12/new-gol-destinations-aruba-san-jose-and-cancun-added-for-2024-high-season/">GOL Linhas Aéreas</a> landed at Reina Beatrix International Airport (AUA), serving <a href="https://www.airportaruba.com/">Aruba</a>, making it its second destination in the Caribbean.
The nonstop flights will be operated with Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft from São Paulo/Guarulhos (GRU), enabling connections to Asunción, Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza, Montevideo, Rosario, and Santa Cruz de la Sierra, as well as its extensive domestic network.
“With Aruba, GOL now serves 15 destinations and 16 international airports across the Americas, and it will continue strengthening its international presence. We are the only airline offering direct flights to Aruba from Brazil. This gives us the confidence that we are connecting our people with joy, comfort, and safety, contributing to the development of tourism and the economy across the region,” stated Rafael Araújo, GOL’s Air Network Planning Director.
Brazil did not previously have nonstop flights to Aruba, so tourists usually traveled via Avianca, LATAM, or Copa Airlines, connecting through their respective hubs. In mid-2023, Azul began flights between Belo Horizonte and Curaçao, Aruba’s neighboring island, with an average occupancy rate of 80%.

Brazilian, Argentine, Paraguayan, and Uruguayan travelers do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days in Aruba. However, an international yellow fever vaccination certificate is required, with the vaccine administered at least 10 days before the boarding date.

Aruba Welcomes GOL Airlines: Direct Flights from São Paulo Begin

Azul Linhas Aéreas inaugurated on December 9 its additional flights connecting Belo Horizonte (MG) with Curaçao, in the Caribbean, along with the new extension of this operation to Fort Lauderdale, in the United States, leveraging fifth freedom rights.
With the inclusion of the international route between Curaçao and Fort Lauderdale, tourists and residents of the island now have a new option to travel to Florida, complementing the existing services to Miami (eight flights per week by American Airlines and three by Surinam Airways).
The route between Belo Horizonte and Curaçao, which began on June 24, 2023, with a weekly frequency and was expanded to two within less than a year, has now increased by 100%, reaching four weekly frequencies. This expansion has been made possible thanks to a partnership with the Ministry of Economic Development of Curaçao, the Curaçao Tourism Board, and Invest Minas, according to our associated media outlet in Brazil, <a href="https://aeroin.net/comecam-os-voos-da-azul-entre-a-ilha-caribenha-de-curacao-e-os-estados-unidos/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AEROIN</a>.
The flights will depart from Tancredo Neves Airport at 10:40 AM, landing in Curaçao at 3:40 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The return from the Caribbean island will be at 1:10 PM, arriving in the capital of Minas Gerais at 8:10 PM on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The flights are operated with Airbus A320neo aircraft.
The island, located in the Caribbean Sea, is already one of the most popular international destinations for Brazilians, according to data from Azul Viagens, Azul&#8217;s tourism operator. Curaçao offers various outdoor activities, such as diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, and more. The beauty of its beaches with various shades of blue, its capital with Dutch architecture, its climate, and the hospitality of its people have captivated Brazilians.
In one year of operations on the island, Azul has transported more than 22,000 passengers and operated over 170 flights between Belo Horizonte and Curaçao. The flights are available on Azul&#8217;s website, through its sales center, or via associated travel agencies.

<a href="http://www.aa.com">American Airlines </a>has suspended its flights to Haiti indefinitely, citing the social and security crisis in the Caribbean country. The decision comes after several incidents in which U.S. aircraft were struck by gunfire during landing and takeoff maneuvers at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince.
Among the affected airlines are Spirit Airlines, JetBlue, and American Airlines itself. On November 11, a serious incident involved a Spirit Airlines flight, when bullet impacts pierced the fuselage of an Airbus A320 during its final approach for landing. A cabin crew member was injured, and the bullets lodged in the aircraft&#8217;s sidewall and overhead compartments. In response, the pilots aborted the landing and diverted the flight to Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, where the aircraft remained grounded for repairs.
On the same day, an American Airlines flight bound for Miami was hit by gunfire shortly after taking off from Port-au-Prince. Neither the crew nor passengers noticed the attack, and the damage was discovered during an inspection in Miami. Similarly, a JetBlue flight heading to New York’s JFK Airport was also struck by gunfire while departing Haiti. The damage was identified during a post-flight technical review.
<h4>Operational restrictions and suspension</h4>
Following these attacks, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a NOTAM prohibiting U.S. airlines from flying below 10,000 feet over Haiti. Although the advisory was later lifted, as of December 4, all civilian flights to and from Toussaint Louverture International Airport have been suspended. This measure is expected to remain in place at least until next Tuesday, while authorities work to stabilize the security situation.
American Airlines, which operated flights from Miami to Haiti, has stated that it will review the possibility of resuming operations by late 2025. The airline was one of the three U.S. carriers still providing service to the country, deeply affected by its social and political crisis.

American Airlines Suspends Flights to Haiti Indefinitely Amid Security Crisis

<a href="https://www.flyliat20.com/">LIAT 2020</a>, the new version of the airline, continues expanding after its return, adding new routes in the Caribbean and recovering destinations from the defunct LIAT (1974) Ltd.
On November 19, it arrived in South America with flights to Georgetown (GEO), Guyana, and on November 29 to Tortola (EIS) in the British Virgin Islands. On December 19 and 20, it will fly to Port of Spain (POS), Trinidad and Tobago, and Kingston (KIN), Jamaica, respectively.
LIAT 2020 started flying in April 2024, with a 70% stake by the Nigerian airline Air Peace and the remaining 30% in the hands of the Antigua &amp; Barbuda government. The African airline has invested around USD 65 million in LIAT, while the Caribbean country contributed USD 20 million.
The airline stands out for offering a full onboard service, with snacks and drinks served free of charge, which is uncommon on regional flights.
<h4>More aircraft for LIAT</h4>
LIAT 2020 began operations with two Embraer ERJ 145LR (5N-BVD and 5N-BXG), which were part of the regional fleet of Air Peace. In November, it added its third ERJ 145 (5N-BUV), and next week it will add three ATR 42-600 from the former LIAT.
The Antigua and Barbuda government emphasized that it would pay US$12.1 million into an escrow account for the acquisition of other aircraft owned by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), based in Barbados.
Among the company&#8217;s ambitious plans is to expand to the United States, with a Boeing 737-500 scheduled to operate to Miami (MIA). The Antigua and Barbuda government seeks to negotiate open skies and update an Air Services Agreement (ASA) to allow operations in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the U.S. mainland.

LIAT 2020 Launches South American Routes and Expands Fleet with ATR and ERJ Aircraft

After a four-year absence, <a href="https://www.latam.com">LATAM Airlines</a> returns to Jamaica with the resumption of its non-stop service between Lima and Montego Bay. With three weekly flights, the airline provides the only connection between South America and the Caribbean nation.
Flight LA 2446 was operated by an Airbus A320 registered as CC-BFI, which departed from Jorge Chávez International Airport at 12:16 local time on December 1 and landed at Sir Donald Sangster International Airport at 16:39, after four hours and 23 minutes of flight.
“I am very excited to announce that after 4 years LATAM is back in Jamaica, reconnecting Peru and South America with this beautiful island, its culture, and warm hospitality,” said Gonzalo Ramírez Herrera, Director of Airports for North America and the Caribbean at LATAM Airlines.

Jamaica no problem!: LATAM Airlines Returns to Montego Bay

<a href="https://www.flyzair.com/">Z Air</a>, based in Curaçao, will receive it&#8217;s first Embraer ERJ 145, aiming to operate on the most distant destinations in its network and add new routes in the future. A second ERJ is currently undergoing maintenance and painting. In July 2024, the company announced that it would add two Embraer ERJ 140s and open a connection to Medellín/Rionegro (MDE) and St. Marteen (SXM). The current fleet of three Saab 340Bs will focus on the Dutch Caribbean (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao) and Barranquilla (BAQ), Colombia.
This decision came after the cessation of operations of Jetair Caribbean in June 2024, which stopped flying to Jamaica, St. Maarten, Colombia, and Suriname. The ERJ 140, with a capacity for 44 passengers and a range of 3,044 kilometers, will allow Z Air to access the destinations of the defunct airline, such as Jamaica, Haiti, and St. Maarten.

The ERJs will also allow the replacement of the Saab 340Bs, enabling an increase in flights within the Dutch Caribbean after the reduction of airport fees from USD 36 to USD 15, which is expected to boost demand that the current fleet cannot sustain.
<h4>The current state of Z Air</h4>
Z Air has been modernizing its fleet. In 2021, it acquired three Saab 340B aircraft with a capacity for 34 passengers, used for regular and charter operations in the Caribbean, South America, and Central America. Additionally, it operates two Learjets for air ambulance services.
Currently, Z Air operates flights to Aruba (AUA), Bonaire (BON), Curaçao (CUR), Medellín/Rionegro (MDE), and Barranquilla (BAQ), Colombia, with the following frequencies:

From Saab to Embraer: Z Air’s Fleet Modernization and Route Expansion Plans

<a href="https://www.aerolineas.com.ar/">Aerolíneas Argentinas</a> will maintain its new routes from Tucumán (TUC) and Rosario (ROS) to Punta Cana (PUJ), Dominican Republic, throughout the year. The update was observed in the reservation system, along with frequency increases from Córdoba to the Caribbean.
The new schedule will provide ten weekly flights between Punta Cana and Argentina year-round, not including additional frequencies during the summer season.
The route from Córdoba was inaugurated on September 13 with two weekly flights, which will increase to four per week from January to March 2025. However, starting in April, it will reduce to three weekly flights instead of two. All operations will use Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft configured for 170 passengers.
On the other hand, Rosario and Tucumán to Punta Cana will begin on January 3 and 5, 2025, respectively, and were initially planned to run until March 2025. However, the new schedule reveals they will operate year-round with one weekly flight on a Boeing 737 MAX 8.
According to the Cirium platform, in 2025 Aerolíneas Argentinas is expected to offer 245,140 seats to Punta Cana, representing a 92.5% increase compared to 2024.

International Air Transport Association (IATA) warned about the deterioration of the runway at the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia, Guanacaste, urging the Costa Rican government «to promptly reactivate the rehabilitation project previously underway, as well as a short-, medium-, and long-term maintenance plan to ensure its proper functionality.»
Given that Liberia Airport is a key entry point for international travelers visiting Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, operational disruptions could negatively impact the local economy.
IATA points out that the runway&#8217;s deterioration has worsened over the past year, an issue the industry has repeatedly highlighted, partly due to heavy rains and delays in the previously planned rehabilitation work. The suspension of the works has not only complicated airline planning but also caused disruptions during the high season, when thousands of tourists, mainly from the United States and Canada, visit the region.
The association, representing over 300 airlines worldwide, also mentioned issues stemming from the sudden closure of the airport and its subsequent reopening. According to the organization, this decision led to flight diversions and cancellations, affecting scheduled itineraries and inconveniencing passengers.
«IATA reiterates its willingness to collaborate and establish an open communication channel with authorities to ensure that operations at the airport can be conducted safely, efficiently, and smoothly,» it concluded.

<a href="https://www.aircaraibes.com/">Air Caraïbes</a> received its fourth ATR 72-600, registered as F-OSIL, at the manufacturer’s facility in Toulouse/Blagnac (TLS), which will allow the airline to strengthen its presence in the French Caribbean.
F-OSIL is currently in Praia (RAI), Sal Island, on its delivery flight, after departing from Toulouse and making a stop in Gran Canaria (LPA). It will subsequently make stops in Fortaleza (FOR) and Cayenne (CAY) before arriving in Martinique.
The airline operates with four ATR 72-600 (F-OSIL, F-OSIT, F-OSIV, and F-OSIX), and the last time it received a turboprop was in December 2019. The aircraft primarily operate from Fort-de-France (FDF), Martinique, connecting with Saint Martin (SFG) and Pointe-à-Pitre (PTP), Guadeloupe, with 4 to 9 flights per day depending on the season.

New Codeshare Agreement Connects Europe to the Caribbean via KLM and Winair

The Dutch Caribbean Cooperation of Airports (DCCA) announced a measure to reduce the Passenger Facility Charges (PFC) for inter-island flights from the ABC Islands <a href="https://aviacionline.com/tag/aruba/">Aruba</a>, Bonaire, and Curaçao. This initiative, aimed at strengthening regional connectivity and making travel more accessible, aligns with the DCCA&#8217;s Joint Strategic Plan.
Starting in January 2025, the PFC for flights between these islands will be reduced from USD 36 to USD 15 per passenger, directly impacting the final ticket prices offered by local airlines. Implementation will be gradual, beginning in January in Curaçao and Bonaire and in February in Aruba. The high-traffic route between Aruba and Curaçao will be among the most benefited by this adjustment.

This decision is the result of two years of research on price elasticity for inter-island travel. A study conducted in 2023 concluded that lower fees would stimulate passenger demand. This analysis was presented during the 2023 DCCA Congress and served as the basis for the adjustment. Additionally, a pilot project in Sint Maarten, featuring reduced fees for routes to Saba and Statia, demonstrated that day trips could become more accessible with adjusted rates.
DCCA President Jonny Andersen highlighted that “airports are more than just gateways; they are vital connections that bring our islands closer. By reducing the PFC, we aim to make inter-island travel more affordable, foster unity among our communities, and support regional economic growth”.
<h4>Flights between Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao</h4>
The DCCA reported that three companies operating between the islands will benefit: Divi Divi Air, Z Air, and Winair, using aircraft ranging from 9 to 45 seats. According to the Cirium platform, the three airlines combined operate up to 300 flights weekly between Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao, which will represent over 325,000 seats in 2024.

In a new update to its reservation system, <a href="https://aviacionline.com/tag/westjet/">WestJet</a> has announced the suspension of its flights to Barbados (BGI) and Puerto Plata (POP), Dominican Republic, starting in April 2025. These destinations had been served for over a decade, operated from Toronto (YYZ) using Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 737-800 aircraft.
Flights to Puerto Plata, launched in December 2007, began as seasonal winter operations and later expanded into year-round service. Following the COVID-19 crisis, WestJet restricted these flights to specific seasons until resuming year-round service in 2024.
According to the latest update, the last flight to Puerto Plata will take place on April 25, 2025. Following this suspension, Air Transat will remain the only airline connecting Puerto Plata with Canada, offering regular flights to Toronto and Montreal, while Sunwing will continue to operate charter services.
Barbados, on the other hand, has been part of WestJet’s network since late 2008. The service began as seasonal and became year-round in 2010. However, following the pandemic, flights returned to seasonal operations until resuming year-round service in 2024. WestJet plans to suspend its flights to the island on April 26, 2025. Going forward, Air Canada will be the sole operator offering direct flights between Canada and the Caribbean island.
<h4>WestJet’s impact on both destinations</h4>
With this decision, the airline leaves a gap, as it had been transporting around 60,000 passengers annually between Canada and Barbados. Canada is the third most important market for tourism in Barbados, especially during the peak cruise season.
As for Puerto Plata, which has relied on connections with Canada to attract visitors, being the second most important market, it will also see a reduction in air service. WestJet was moving approximately 19,000 passengers annually.

Avelo Airlines has launched its regular international passenger services with year-round nonstop flights between Hartford and <a href="https://www.mbjairport.com/">Montego Bay</a>, offering approximately 1,000 seats per week to/from Jamaica. Avelo Airlines Connects Connecticut to Jamaica with Nonstop Service

<a href="https://www.sunriseairways.net">Sunrise Airways</a> resumes its operations to the United States with the restart of the Cap-Haïtien-Miami route, offering three weekly flights. For a limited time, it will be the only operator flying between the U.S. and Haiti.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has banned U.S. airlines from flying to Haiti for thirty days. This measure was taken after a Spirit aircraft was struck by gunfire from gangs while approaching the runway. In this incident, only one cabin crew member sustained minor injuries, and passengers were unharmed. Following investigations, American Airlines and JetBlue confirmed they had also experienced similar attacks.
American, JetBlue, and Spirit previously offered flights from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and New York-JFK to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti.

Sunrise Airways Restarts Flights to the U.S.: Cap-Haïtien-Miami Route Resumes

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has decided to ban all flights between the United States and Haiti for a period of 30 days due to «safety risks to air operations associated with ongoing security instability.» This also affects flights over Haitian airspace below 10,000 feet.
This decision comes after <a href="https://aviacionline.com/2024/11/avion-de-spirit-airlines-recibe-disparos-al-intentar-aterrizar-en-puerto-principe-haiti/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a Spirit Airlines Airbus A320neo was shot at while attempting to land in Port-au-Prince from Fort Lauderdale on Monday afternoon</a>. A cabin crew member suffered minor injuries, and the flight had to be diverted to Santiago de los Caballeros in the neighboring Dominican Republic. It was later revealed that during an inspection in New York, a JetBlue aircraft returning from Haiti was found to have bullet damage, while another American Airlines plane was also shot, as reported by CNN.
These are not the first instances of commercial aircraft being shot at while trying to land in Haiti, a country facing recurrent political instability and power struggles for decades, with the UN mission led by Brazil yielding limited practical results. In March, an A321 was also targeted by gunfire while landing in Port-au-Prince.
The <a href="https://www.iata.org" target="_blank" rel="noopener">International Air Transport Association (IATA)</a> condemned the recent incidents affecting civil aviation in Haiti and highlighted the need for effective security measures to protect air operations in the country.
«Safe air operations are crucial for Haiti’s connectivity, given its island geography and reliance on aviation for essential goods and mobility,» stated Peter Cerdá, IATA’s Regional Vice President for the Americas, <a href="https://aviacionline.com/2024/11/iata-pide-accion-inmediata-del-gobierno-haitiano-para-garantizar-la-seguridad-aerea/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in a statement issued on Monday</a>. «We call on the Haitian government to act swiftly to secure air routes and restore confidence in the aviation sector,» he added.
