Iberia will resume its flights between Madrid and Washington, D.C. tomorrow, Saturday, April 12, operating the route for the first time with the Airbus A321XLR, a narrow-body aircraft with transatlantic range. The service will offer up to seven weekly frequencies during the summer and, for the first time, will operate year-round.
The inaugural flight is scheduled to depart from Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport at 11:50 a.m. and land at Washington Dulles International Airport at 3:00 p.m. The U.S. capital becomes the airline’s second long-haul destination served with the A321XLR, following its debut on flights to Boston.

allows Iberia to increase frequencies to Washington compared to the four weekly flights offered in 2024, reaching daily service in September and October. Iberia highlights that the aircraft gives the company greater flexibility to operate long-haul routes with smaller capacity, compared to traditional wide-body aircraft.
As part of its summer 2025 schedule, Iberia plans to operate up to 140 weekly flights between Spain and the United States, a 14% increase over last year. The total seat offering will exceed 1.1 million.
The growth will be concentrated particularly on routes to Washington and Boston, both operated with the A321XLR. For Washington, the airline will increase from four to seven weekly flights. For Boston, it will double operations from one to two daily flights starting in June.
In addition to these two destinations, Iberia also offers direct flights from Madrid to New York (two daily), Miami (two daily), Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles (one daily each), and San Francisco (three weekly).
The United States remains Iberia’s largest intercontinental market, and the airline notes that the arrival of additional A321XLR aircraft in the coming months will allow it to further strengthen its presence in this strategic market.
The A321XLR (Extra Long Range)—for which Iberia was the launch operator—can fly routes up to 8,700 kilometers with a single-aisle configuration. This technology offers operational efficiency on both medium- and long-haul routes, enabling access to markets where demand does not justify the use of larger aircraft.
