The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is investigating a potential security breach after a threat actor on a dark web forum claimed to have leaked sensitive data from the organization. According to the post, the alleged breach involves 42,000 documents containing personal and professional information, including names, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and details about education and employment.
In response to the allegations, ICAO issued a statement emphasizing that it is taking the matter "very seriously" and has implemented immediate security measures while conducting a thorough investigation. "Further information will be provided once our preliminary investigation is complete," the organization stated.
The alleged attacker, known for targeting international organizations, has not disclosed how the data was obtained or confirmed its authenticity. However, if verified, the breach could pose significant risks to ICAO and individuals whose data may have been compromised.
As a United Nations agency responsible for setting standards in international civil aviation, ICAO joins a growing list of global organizations targeted by cyberattacks in recent years.
