India joins the Eurodrone as an observer, paving the way for technological cooperation and joint defense with Europe
After the Government of Japan (GoJ) became an Observer State of the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) in the MALE RPAS (Eurodrone) Program in November 2023, the Government of India officially requested on August 27, 2024, to also be granted Observer State status in the Eurodrone program, which was confirmed today.
On behalf of the OCCAR Board of Supervisors (BoS), the OCCAR-EA Director, Joachim Sucker, delivered the signed Letter of Approval (LoA) from the now-former Chairman of the OCCAR Board of Supervisors, Lieutenant General Frédéric Goetynck, to the Indian Ambassador to Germany, His Excellency Mr. Ajit Gupte, at the Embassy of India in Berlin.
Mr. Sucker emphasized India’s willingness to explore opportunities to develop areas of mutual interest and its recognition of the importance of cooperation between India and Europe. He also expressed his hope that this first step will lead to a long, fruitful, and mutually beneficial collaboration.
The Eurodrone is a Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) designed for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions. It is being developed by Airbus Defence & Space GmbH (prime contractor), Leonardo Spa, Dassault Aviation, and Airbus Defence & Space SAU for Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. One of its main features is its open architecture, designed for future upgrades and customization for each of the European armed forces as well as other interested nations with which it will operate.
