JetSMART to Cut Fuel Consumption by 2% Per Flight with Digital Winglets
Digital Winglets is an advanced technology designed to optimize flight routes (FPO) using Traffic Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests (TASAR), enabling greater efficiency and sustainability in aviation.
JetSMART Airlines has implemented Digital Winglets, an AI-driven technology that uses real-time data to provide flight-specific recommendations, improving operational efficiency, reducing costs, and supporting sustainability goals.
According to the airline, JetSMART is the first carrier in Latin America to adopt this technology, developed in collaboration with NASA and licensed by APiJET. The company highlights that if the aviation industry widely adopted similar technologies, the environmental impact could be equivalent to planting 870 million trees, covering an area the size of France.
Optimizing Flight Routes with AI
Announced on the International Day for CO2 Emissions Reduction, Digital Winglets optimize Flight Path Optimization (FPO) through Traffic Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests (TASAR). Developed by NASA and licensed by APiJET, this system leverages proprietary algorithms, mapping technologies, and live status data to enable JetSMART to make real-time, route-specific decisions.
This innovation allows the airline to save fuel, improve on-time performance, and reduce carbon emissions, significantly enhancing efficiency and productivity.
"Digital Winglets are designed to analyze each aircraft’s unique characteristics under real flight conditions, generating tailored flight path recommendations. Using these insights, JetSMART can request Air Traffic Control approval for optimized routes, whether vertical, lateral, or a combination of both," said Rob Green, CEO of APiJET.
A Step Toward Smarter Aviation
Estuardo Ortiz, CEO of JetSMART, emphasized the airline’s commitment to technological innovation and sustainability:
"At JetSMART, we are at the forefront of aviation technology, striving for maximum efficiency and a minimal carbon footprint. Innovation is a key part of our SMART model, and we are proud to be pioneers in using Digital Winglets. This AI-powered solution will reduce fuel consumption and emissions while allowing us to maintain our mission of offering the lowest fares by being the most efficient airline."
Digital Winglets underwent testing in autumn 2024 and are now fully deployed, providing real-time recommendations that JetSMART’s dispatchers and pilots evaluate for Air Traffic Control approval.
