KLM Expands Pilot Training Center to Meet Growing Demand
Its entry into service is scheduled for mid-2026.
KLM has begun expanding its pilot training center, with the foundation stone laid yesterday by Bas Brouns, the airline’s Chief Financial Officer. The new facility, named The Link, is expected to be operational by mid-2026.
Investing in the Future of Pilot Training
"With The Link, we can secure our training capacity for the future. We choose to train our pilots in-house because it gives us better control over quality and continuity. This is a crucial investment in pilot training and, therefore, in the future of KLM," said Brouns.
Driven by the growing demand for air travel and the importance of the Netherlands' international connections, KLM projects an increase in its pilot workforce from 3,000 to approximately 4,000 in the coming years. To meet this demand, the airline is making a significant expansion of its training capacity, including the addition of new flight simulators.
Sustainable Construction and Advanced Infrastructure
KLM has selected SPIE, a multitechnical service provider, as the lead contractor for the project. KLM Real Estate & Facility Contracting will oversee construction alongside the airline’s Flight Operations division.
The foundation will be built using DPA piles, a technique that minimizes ground vibrations, ensuring the protection of existing simulators and the nearby operations control center.
The new facility is designed to meet the latest sustainability and energy efficiency standards. It will be a near-zero energy building, featuring:
- No reliance on gas
- Heat pumps for heating
- Solar panels on the roof
- A sedum-covered green roof, which enhances thermal insulation and water retention
With this expansion, KLM reinforces its commitment to high-quality pilot training and sustainable aviation infrastructure, preparing for the future of global air travel.
