Korean Air has closed a deal with Boeing for the purchase of up to 50 wide-body aircraft, marking the largest order in its history
The contract includes 20 units of the 777-9 model, 20 of the 787-10, and options for 10 additional Dreamliners, the company reported, as had been previously anticipated by Aviacionline on Monday.
The order, which was hinted at as a commitment during the 2024 Farnborough Airshow, will be added to the official Boeing Commercial Airplanes orders and deliveries site.
This operation comes as part of the integration process with Asiana Airlines, a merger that positions Korean Air as one of the world’s largest airlines by capacity, according to the group itself. In this context, the carrier has started renewing its fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft to strengthen its global network.
“For more than 50 years, Korean Air and Boeing have built a relationship based on trust and mutual growth. Today, we further strengthen that historic relationship with this landmark order,” said Walter Cho, President and CEO of Korean Air and the Hanjin Group.
As Boeing highlights, the selected models — the 777X and the 787 Dreamliner — offer a combination of economic efficiency and range that will enable the airline to sustain its long-term growth. “This record order is the culmination of our more than half-century partnership with Korean Air and demonstrates the strength of Boeing’s wide-body family,” said Dan Schull, Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Northeast Asia at Boeing.
Korean Air recently unveiled its new brand image on a 787-10 as part of its strategy to operate under a unified identity following the merger with Asiana. The company defines itself as a key player in global aviation and emphasizes its commitment to innovation in this new phase.
