While the summer season is coming to an end, the Piarco International Airport (POS), serving Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, has descended into chaos due to the cancellation of numerous flights by Caribbean Airlines (CAL) resulting from an indefinite strike initiated by cabin crew and pilots after failed wage negotiations with the airline.

In a statement, Caribbean Airlines attributed the operational interruptions to «resource limitations,» without providing further details. «The airline is experiencing delays and cancellations in many of its domestic and international services. Affected customers are assured that they will be accommodated on the earliest available flights,» the statement added.

Caribbean Airlines also announced that travelers with tickets between Tobago and Trinidad can use the ferry service with their existing tickets.

At the time of this publication, 40 flights scheduled for August 20th to and from Piarco have been canceled. It’s important to note that 57% of these flights were destined for Scarborough (TAB) on the island of Tobago, while the rest were headed to New York, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando, Toronto, Saint Lucia, Guyana, and Barbados. It should be mentioned that disruptions are limited to flights within Trinidad and Tobago; operations at the airline’s second base in Kingston (KIN), Jamaica, are not affected.

Caribbean Airlines is the largest airline in terms of passenger movement in the region, currently operating a fleet comprised of ten ATR 72-600 aircraft and nine Boeing 737-8 planes, serving 24 destinations in the Caribbean, South America, the United States, and Canada.
