LATAM wants to operate a daily Santiago de Chile-Buenos Aires-Miami flight before the end of the year
LATAM Airlines aims to start a daily flight between Santiago, Buenos Aires, and Miami by the end of 2025, under the framework of the fifth freedom of the air. Additionally, it is working to incorporate Argentina into the Joint Venture agreement with Delta.
LATAM Airlines Group announced its intention to operate a daily flight on the Santiago de Chile-Buenos Aires-Miami route, using the framework of the fifth freedom of the air, in accordance with the existing bilateral agreements between Chile and Argentina. The implementation of this new flight is subject to the relevant governmental approvals and could begin in late 2025.
The use of the fifth freedom of the air refers to a provision in bilateral agreements that allows airlines to operate flights between two countries, making a stop in a third country, without that third country being part of the original agreement. In this case, LATAM Airlines would have the possibility to operate flights from Santiago to Buenos Aires, and then continue to Miami, with the potential to also offer flights between Argentina and the United States, without the need for these two countries to be directly involved in the bilateral agreement.
This type of agreement aligns with Argentina's Open Skies policy. Through this policy, Argentina has been signing bilateral agreements aimed at relaxing restrictions on frequencies, capacities, and traffic rights, promoting greater competition and better options for passengers.
The bilateral agreements between Argentina and Chile
The bilateral agreement between Argentina and Chile revised in June 2024 allows airlines from both countries to operate unlimited flights between their respective territories, facilitating air transit between the two countries and promoting connectivity. In addition, these agreements grant the eighth and ninth freedoms of the air, which allow airlines to offer flights within the territory of the other country, without having an exclusive origin or destination in their own territory.
The group is expected to implement the daily flight on one of the highest demand international routes – and thus, generously offered by current operators of the route – before the start of the summer season in 2026, after receiving approval from the involved authorities.
Additionally, the holding company stated that it is working on incorporating Argentina into its Joint Venture (JV) agreement with Delta Air Lines. The goal is to improve connectivity between Argentina and the United States and Canada, facilitating access to a network of more than 300 destinations and providing a seamless and efficient travel experience with greater benefits.
