Latin American Cargo City (LACC), the logistics hub of Carrasco International Airport, has announced the construction of a new Courier Terminal on the site of the airport’s former passenger terminal. The new facility is designed to optimize the handling of international shipments, enhancing logistics operations in Uruguay.
With an investment of over $10 million, the project includes a 5,000-square-meter building specifically designed to support the sector’s growth and improve LACC’s operational capacity as a key logistics hub in the region.
Growing Cargo Operations in Uruguay
According to data from the National Directorate of Civil Aviation and Aeronautical Infrastructure (DINACIA), 26,924.49 tons of cargo were handled in 2023. Major companies operating at the airport include AirClass, LATAM Cargo, Lufthansa Cargo, and Avianca Cargo.
"This new terminal will drive the sustained growth of e-commerce by optimizing infrastructure and services. It will directly enhance the experience for courier companies and the end customer, ensuring a more agile and efficient process," said Bruno Guella, General Manager of LACC.
Revamping the Former Passenger Terminal
The old passenger terminal, which was in operation until December 29, 2009, will be repurposed for courier operations, expanding its capacity and improving logistics efficiency. The new facility will feature:
- Larger reception areas for incoming flights.
- Dedicated spaces for courier companies to streamline operations.
- More loading points for trucks and vans.
The project also includes advanced equipment such as:
- Automated vertical warehouses for package storage.
- Cold storage chambers for temperature-sensitive products.
- Private operational boxes for exclusive client use.
- Corporate offices and multipurpose rooms to optimize logistics processes.
E-Commerce Boom Drives Investment
LACC stated that this investment is a response to the rapid growth of e-commerce in Uruguay. In 2024, international purchases doubled compared to the previous year. According to Uruguayan Customs, in the second half of 2024, international shipments increased by 170% compared to the same period in 2023.
"The rise of e-commerce has created a global logistics challenge. This project not only adds new infrastructure but also redefines processes to enhance efficiency and optimize delivery times, always prioritizing the end customer," added Guella.
24/7 Operations & Future Projections
The Courier Terminal will operate 24/7, 365 days a year, with dedicated personnel and cutting-edge technology to ensure uninterrupted operations. It will also facilitate integration with Customs and other regulatory bodies, streamlining shipment processing and reducing turnaround times.
The first construction phase is set to begin in February 2025, with the main building scheduled for mid-2025. The terminal is expected to be inaugurated in the second half of 2026.
