Loganair to Establish New Base at Southampton Airport, Expanding Regional Connectivity
The event represents a significant milestone for regional connectivity and the local economy.
Loganair, the UK’s largest regional airline, has announced that Southampton Airport will become its tenth operational base, marking a significant milestone for regional connectivity and the local economy.
The new base, set to open in October 2025, will initially operate with two ATR 72-600 aircraft, adding 140,000 extra seats per year. This expansion will not only enhance connectivity across southern England but also create new job opportunities for pilots, cabin crew, and engineers in the region.
Strengthening Regional Links
Loganair CEO Luke Farajallah emphasized that the new base aligns with the airline’s long-standing mission to connect remote regions, cities, and island communities with the mainland. He noted that Southampton’s strategic location offers a strong market for Loganair’s expansion, with local residents and businesses expected to benefit from increased connectivity. The airline also plans to recruit locally to staff the new base.
New Routes and Increased Capacity
As part of this expansion, Loganair will launch two new routes, starting October 26:
- Southampton – Manchester
- Manchester – Exeter
Additionally, the airline will increase capacity on its Southampton – Edinburgh route, upgrading from 49 to 72 seats per flight.
Economic Impact and Connectivity Boost
Kam Jandu, CEO of AGS Airports, which owns Southampton Airport, highlighted the economic benefits of Loganair’s expansion. He stated that the move will create jobs, strengthen business links, and improve connectivity between key cities such as Manchester and Southampton.
The reintroduction of the Southampton-Manchester route is particularly notable. Previously, this route handled over 200,000 passengers annually, providing key connections for business, tourism, and global travel through Loganair’s interline agreements with major airlines.
Investment in Airport Infrastructure
This announcement follows AGS Airports’ February 2024 plans to install Next-Generation Security Scanners (NGSC) at Southampton Airport. These advanced screening systems will enhance both security and operational efficiency, reinforcing Southampton’s position as a key hub for regional aviation in the UK.
