Lufthansa Group is advancing its European aviation expansion strategy by evaluating a possible acquisition of Air Europa. As part of this approach, the company has introduced an Air Europa Boeing 787-9 into Brussels Airlines operations under a wet-lease agreement— a move that could be linked to its interest in the Spanish market.
The aircraft was deployed on the Brussels–New York route, helping to ease pressure on Brussels Airlines' fleet, which has been affected by technical issues and Airbus A330 maintenance. However, this initiative may go beyond an operational solution and could signal a broader strategic move by the German airline group.
According to the Spanish news outlet El Confidencial, the decision to use a model similar to Air Europa’s fleet has fueled speculation that Lufthansa is conducting a detailed study of the Spanish airline’s operations.

Madrid Hub: A Key Asset
Air Europa’s Madrid hub is a strategic asset, serving as a vital connection point between Europe and South America. Lufthansa Group, which already collaborates with Air Europa, is emerging as a leading contender for the acquisition, further reinforcing this partnership through the 787-9 lease agreement.
Meanwhile, talks between Air Europa and Air France-KLM appear to be more focused on strengthening negotiation leverage rather than forming a concrete alliance.
Lufthansa Group's Expanding Footprint in Europe
In recent years, Lufthansa Group has significantly expanded its presence in the European airline sector. In addition to its negotiations with Air Europa, the group has:
- Acquired a 41% stake in ITA Airways
- Announced a 10% stake in AirBaltic
- Engaged in talks for the privatization of TAP Air Portugal
These moves reinforce Lufthansa’s strategic push to consolidate its influence in European aviation.
