Lufthansa to Be the First Operator of the Boeing 777X
Boeing has confirmed that Lufthansa will be the launch customer for the 777-9.
The confirmation that German airline Lufthansa will be the first to operate the Boeing 777X—the largest twin-engine aircraft ever built—puts an end to speculation about whether Emirates Airline would receive the first unit of this model.
During Boeing’s fourth-quarter 2024 earnings conference, the company’s Chief Financial Officer, Brian West, officially announced that Lufthansa will lead the list of customers for this aircraft in the certification process.
Boeing also acknowledged facing challenges related to the seat certification process for Lufthansa’s ordered aircraft but remains committed to delivering the first 777-9 in 2026, according to Aeroin, our partner media outlet.
These seat certification issues are separate from the broader challenge Boeing faces in obtaining full aircraft certification for the 777-9 from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
For years, uncertainty loomed over whether Lufthansa or Emirates would be the first recipient of the Boeing 777-9. In 2017, Boeing confirmed that Emirates had secured the title of launch customer for the 777-9, taking over the position from Lufthansa. However, the company later clarified that no official initial operator had been designated.
Lufthansa has placed orders for 27 Boeing 777X aircraft, including both the 777-9 and 777-8 freighter variants, while Emirates remains the largest customer with 205 orders, according to Boeing data.
