Mexicana de Aviación Updates Business Plan and Embraer E2 Fleet Renewal for 2025
The inclusion of the Embraer E2 fleet marks a turning point for Mexicana de Aviación, signaling a transition towards more efficient and modern aircraft. These planes are expected to enhance fuel efficiency, reduce operational costs, and support the airline’s strategy to expand its network while adapting to fluctuating market demands
Mexicana de Aviación has provided an updated master business plan during a conference led by Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, alongside the airline's CEO, Leobardo Ávila Bojórquez. The event highlighted operational adjustments and outlined the delivery schedule for new Embraer E2 aircraft, which are pivotal to the company’s fleet renewal and growth strategy for 2025.
The conference followed uncertainty surrounding the airline's viability after the closure of nine routes and the cancellation of seven destinations earlier in January 2025. These routes were previously operated with three Embraer ERJ 145 aircraft in collaboration with TAR Aerolíneas. According to Ávila Bojórquez, these decisions were necessary to adapt to market demand and seasonal fluctuations in the aviation sector.
Currently, Mexicana de Aviación maintains a single ERJ 145 operating flights from Santa Lucía to Palenque, Ciudad Victoria, and Ixtepec, routes retained due to limited competition. Additionally, the airline operates routes to Chetumal, Guadalajara, Mazatlán, Mérida, Tijuana, and Tulum using three Boeing 737-800 aircraft provided by the Mexican Air Force (FAM).

Despite operational challenges, Ávila Bojórquez reported that the airline transported more than 384,000 passengers in 2024, serving 18 destinations and capturing 0.5% of the market share, as per data from the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC). Looking ahead, the airline plans to expand to 14 destinations in 2025, adding Monterrey and Puerto Vallarta in the second quarter. "We expect to surpass 500,000 passengers and offer more than 83 connections through the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA)," Ávila Bojórquez stated.
Fleet Renewal and Embraer E2 Deliveries
The Mexican government has committed to modernizing the airline as part of a MXN 35 billion (USD 1.7 billion) investment initiative, according to the National Institute of Legal-Aeronautical Research (INIJA). This modernization includes the delivery of five Embraer E2 aircraft in the second half of 2025, as part of a larger order for 10 E190-E2 and 10 E195-E2 jets. These new aircraft will replace the existing Boeing 737-800 and ERJ 145 fleets.
With the arrival of the new Embraer planes, the airline plans to resume the seven destinations suspended in early 2025 while also adding four new cities, which remain undisclosed. "This renewal will allow us to reinstate suspended routes and expand our offerings, diversifying destinations while prioritizing connectivity and service quality," noted Ávila Bojórquez.
As part of its strategy, Mexicana is focusing on digital sales, supported by over 100 international agencies. By January 23, the airline had sold more than 500 tickets for 2025, with 67% purchased in Mexico and 30% in Europe.
The airline continues to face significant challenges, but Ávila Bojórquez remains optimistic: "We are transforming challenges into opportunities to renew and grow with a focus on service quality and a clear vision for the future."
