New Zealand Search and Rescue Services (SRSL), the organization responsible for search and rescue operations across the country, has ordered four Airbus H145 helicopters to enhance its emergency medical services (EMS) capabilities.
These new aircraft will join SRSL’s existing fleet, which already includes other H145 and BK117 models, further expanding operations throughout New Zealand.
Christian Venzal, Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters in Australia and New Zealand, emphasized that the addition of these helicopters “reflects our shared vision of leveraging advanced rotorcraft solutions to enhance response capabilities and raise safety standards.” He added that Airbus is committed to “equipping our partners with the tools they need to navigate mission complexities and continue delivering fast, reliable, efficient, and safe medical care.”
According to Airbus, the H145 is renowned for its reliability, versatility, and advanced technology, making it especially suited for EMS missions in rugged terrain and remote areas—typical features of New Zealand’s landscape. The aircraft is powered by two Safran Arriel 2E engines and features the advanced Helionix avionics suite, along with a Fenestron tail rotor that improves operational safety.
Airbus also notes that the H145 has the lowest CO2 emissions in its class.
There are currently around 1,740 helicopters from the H145 family in operation worldwide, having logged over eight million flight hours. Of these, approximately 600 are dedicated to emergency medical services missions.
