PIA Airbus A320 Lands on Closed Runway in Lahore: Investigation Underway
A PIA Airbus A320, flying from Dammam to Multan, diverted to Lahore due to adverse weather but mistakenly landed on a closed runway. The incident has prompted a thorough investigation and the suspension of the cockpit crew
An Airbus A320 from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), operating a flight from Dammam, Saudi Arabia, to Multan, Pakistan, was forced to divert to Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore, due to adverse weather conditions, including dense fog in Multan.
The pilots decided to divert based on operational safety concerns. However, during the approach, they made a critical error by landing on runway 36L/18L instead of the central runway 36R/18R, which was available for use. This was reported by our associated outlet, Aeroin.
Safety reports revealed that the aircraft touched down on a runway that was not operational and had its lights turned off. This constituted a severe safety violation.
Although the crew managed to land without further incidents, the error raises serious concerns about operational procedures and cockpit crew communication.
Immediately following the incident, both the captain and the first officer were relieved of their duties. A detailed investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that led to this situation.
