Significant Sale of AMRAAM Missiles to Japan for up to $3.64 Billion
U.S. authorizes $3.64 billion sale of advanced AMRAAM missiles to Japan to strengthen its air defense capabilities.
The U.S. Department of State has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the Government of Japan, including a substantial acquisition of advanced medium-range air-to-air AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles in their latest versions, AIM-120D3 and AIM-120C8, valued at approximately $3.64 billion.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of this request, which includes up to 1,200 AMRAAM missiles, 20 AIM-120D-3 guidance sections equipped with anti-spoofing modules and M-Code capabilities, and up to 4 AIM-120C-8 guidance sections.
The sale also includes additional components such as missile propulsion sections, warheads, Captive Air Training Missiles (CATM), missile containers, control section spares, reprogramming and test equipment, as well as comprehensive logistical and technical support. This acquisition aims to strengthen Japan's air defense capabilities amid growing geopolitical instability in the Indo-Pacific region, where tensions between China and the U.S.-led coalition remain high, and Japan plays a key strategic role.
This sale will help ensure Japan's ability to face future threats and enhance its interoperability with U.S. defense forces, further solidifying its role in the regional security framework.
Moreover, according to Janes, Japan is in discussions with Washington via the Japan Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA) to establish a local production line for AMRAAM missiles, a move aimed at meeting the growing demand for guided munitions, as seen in recent high-intensity conflicts such as in Ukraine.
