Six seriously injured after severe turbulence on a Boeing 787 in Africa
The incident resulted in 33 injuries among passengers and crew; the aircraft remains in Lagos
A United Airlines flight between Lagos (Nigeria) and Washington, D.C. descended into chaos after the aircraft experienced severe turbulence while flying over Côte d'Ivoire. The incident resulted in six people with serious injuries and numerous passengers affected.
Flight UA613, operated by a Boeing 787, was cruising at altitude on January 23 when it encountered a sudden variation in the aircraft's speed and attitude due to extreme atmospheric conditions. At the time, the in-flight service was underway, causing multiple objects to be thrown around the cabin and resulting in injuries to passengers and crew.
Following the turbulence, the pilots decided to return to Lagos, where they landed safely.
According to reports from our partner outlet Aeroin, upon arrival at the airport, it was confirmed that:
• Four passengers and two crew members sustained serious injuries.
• 27 passengers and five crew members suffered minor injuries.
In total, the aircraft was carrying 256 people.
Current status of the aircraft
The Boeing 787 remains grounded in Lagos while undergoing a technical evaluation. So far, no additional details have been disclosed regarding damage to the aircraft or the estimated timeline for its return to service.
