South African Airways Expands Fleet to 20 Aircraft with New Airbus A320s
South African Airways' strategic growth comes at a time when many airlines are navigating a complex recovery phase. By bolstering its fleet and expanding its route network, SAA aims to rebuild its reputation as a competitive player in the African aviation market. The airline's ability to secure aircraft through leasing agreements underscores its improved financial health and resilience, positioning it for long-term success in an evolving industry
South African Airways expanded its fleet to 20 aircraft with the addition of two Airbus A320 in recent weeks. These single-aisle planes arrived in Johannesburg under a lease agreement with AerCap, highlighting an improvement in the airline's credit standing with international financial institutions that specialize in aviation financing.
The incorporation of these aircraft represents a major milestone since 2021, the year when SAA resumed operations after undergoing a business rescue process that left its fleet reduced to just six aircraft. According to John Lamola, interim CEO, these new planes will enable increased capacity on domestic and regional routes, making air travel more accessible and affordable.
The aviation sector is still grappling with challenges stemming from post-pandemic supply chain disruptions. These issues have delayed aircraft deliveries and driven up the cost of used planes. Even in the face of such challenges, SAA remains committed to growth, with plans to add five more aircraft in 2025 to strengthen its fleet and meet growing demand.
In addition to its newly incorporated Airbus A320s, the airline's fleet also includes Airbus A330 and A340 wide-body models, primarily used for intercontinental routes. These aircraft were deployed in 2024 on key routes such as Johannesburg–São Paulo, Johannesburg–Perth, and Cape Town–São Paulo.
New routes and service expansion
On January 20, 2025, SAA launched a new service connecting Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam. The airline also increased weekly flights to Harare (Zimbabwe) and Lusaka (Zambia). Frequencies to Lagos (Nigeria) and Accra (Ghana) rose from three to four weekly flights, while services to Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo) now operate five times per week. In November 2024, SAA added Lubumbashi as a new destination in the DRC.
This expansion reflects SAA's efforts to consolidate its current operations, boost connectivity for both leisure and business travelers, and promote commercial exchanges through SAA Cargo. John Lamola emphasized that the airline's focus on growth is designed to strengthen its market position while ensuring a seamless travel experience for passengers.
