Southwest Airlines to Close Two Flight Attendant Bases in Cost-Cutting Move
It will affect 280 attendants who will be reassigned to the airline's other 12 bases.
Southwest Airlines has announced the closure of two satellite flight attendant bases, one in Austin and another in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as part of its efforts to increase efficiency and reduce operational costs.
The change will impact 280 flight attendants, who will be relocated to one of the airline’s 12 other crew bases across different locations, according to a report by Bloomberg Law.
Base Closures Effective July 1
According to an email statement from the airline, the base closures are scheduled for July 1. This decision comes shortly after Southwest Airlines implemented its first-ever involuntary layoffs in its 53-year history, highlighting the financial and operational challenges the airline faces in an increasingly competitive industry.
While the company aims to minimize workforce disruption, the relocation process will bring significant changes for affected employees, requiring them to adapt to new base assignments. Southwest has emphasized that these measures are necessary to ensure the airline's long-term competitiveness and sustainability.
