Southwest sued and Frontier fined by the U.S. government
The U.S. Department of Transportation has filed a lawsuit against Southwest Airlines, accusing it of operating flights "with chronic delays." The DOT also fined Frontier Airlines and JetBlue Airways for similar violations, as part of efforts to enforce federal regulations on deceptive practices in the airline industry
The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) has filed a lawsuit against Southwest Airlines, alleging that the carrier operated flights "with chronic delays," violating federal laws that prohibit deceptive practices.
The case was reported by Flight Global, which noted that the lawsuit was filed on January 15 in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.
In addition, the DOT has imposed a $650,000 fine on Frontier Airlines for the same violation. JetBlue Airways was fined days earlier for similar reasons. These actions underscore the DOT's efforts to enforce regulations regarding airline delays.
While the penalties were issued recently, the incidents in question date back several years, during a period when U.S. airlines faced operational disruptions caused by IT failures and staff shortages. Despite these challenges, DOT guidelines emphasize that airlines cannot continue operating flights they know will face repeated and significant delays.
Under current U.S. regulations, flights are classified as "chronically delayed" if they are recorded at least 10 times per month and arrive more than 30 minutes late over half of the time.
