Less than a month after scaling down its wet-leasing agreement with Mexicana de Aviación, TAR Aerolíneas, Mexico’s largest regional airline, announced the addition of four new routes starting February 23, 2025. This expansion strengthens its presence in the regional flight market.
For the first time, TAR will operate its own flights from Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), connecting it with its headquarters in Querétaro (QRO). Currently, the airline uses an Embraer ERJ-145 to operate Mexicana flights from AIFA, although before January 6, it had three aircraft assigned to this terminal.
From Querétaro, the company already serves Hermosillo (HMO), Mazatlán (MZT), and Torreón (TRC). A new connection to San Luis Potosí (SLP), continuing to Monterrey (MTY), will now be added. According to the company, these routes address the high demand from business travelers, offering an alternative to ground transportation.
Additionally, TAR will introduce a new route between Culiacán (CUL) and La Paz (LAP) in Baja California Sur, aimed at both corporate and tourist segments. This service leverages the gap left by Calafia Airlines, which lost its air operator certificate (AOC) due to operational irregularities.
TAR Aerolíneas in Mexico
With the cessation of operations by Aeromar and Calafia Airlines, TAR has strengthened its leadership in regional and secondary routes in Mexico. In 2024, the airline reported an average occupancy factor of 70% and a cancellation rate below 2%. It operated 24 routes across 10 states, with 17 direct flights and 7 with stops.
TAR is also modernizing its fleet and making administrative adjustments to enhance its competitiveness. The airline has operational plans for 2025 that include fleet expansion and the launch of new routes, aligning with the growth expectations of Mexico’s air market.
According to Cirium Fleets Analyzer, TAR’s active fleet includes five Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft, with another nine stored. The airline covers a network of 14 destinations, including Aguascalientes, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Culiacán, Durango, Guadalajara, Hermosillo, La Paz, Mazatlán, Monterrey, Puerto Vallarta, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, and Torreón.
