U.S. Department of Defense Awards Boeing $84.6 Million Contract for Japan’s E-767 AWACS Modernization
The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded Boeing an $84.6 million contract to upgrade the E-767 Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) fleet operated by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF).
With this modification, the total contract value now stands at $330.5 million under the previously established agreement (FA8730-18-C-0001).
Upgrade Scope and Timeline
The modernization focuses on the installation and verification of mission computing systems, enhancing airspace surveillance and management capabilities.
✔ Work locations: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and San Antonio, Texas
✔ Completion date: December 23, 2028
The contract falls under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, with an initial allocation of $42 million.
Contract management is being handled by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, based at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts.
Strengthening Japan’s Aerial Surveillance
Japan operates a fleet of four Boeing E-767 AWACS aircraft, which have been in service since 2000.
Based on the Boeing 767-200 platform, the E-767 integrates the radar and control systems of the E-3 Sentry, enabling long-range detection and tracking of aerial threats.
Recent and Upcoming Upgrades
In recent years, Boeing has undertaken multiple upgrades for Japan’s E-767 fleet:
✔ 2020: Contract awarded to equip the aircraft with Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B Out), enhancing situational awareness and ensuring compliance with international airspace regulations.
✔ 2024: New modernization efforts focus on upgrading mission computing systems, ensuring that Japan’s AWACS fleet remains a key asset in national air defense amid a rapidly evolving regional security environment.
