Violent Incident at Santiago Airport Raises Security Concerns
A security and protocol failure by Nuevo Pudahuel allowed the same Haitian citizen who caused damage in August 2024 to repeat his actions six months later.
The Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in Santiago was the scene of another violent incident after Emmanuel Bony, a Haitian citizen, launched an attack at the American Airlines check-in area. Armed with a hammer, he destroyed screens and furniture before being subdued by authorities. This event has raised concerns, as it is not the first time Bony has caused damage at the airport.
According to Emol.com, he was also carrying a knife, fuel, and matches, heightening fears about his intentions. In August 2024, the same individual had been arrested for a similar act at the airport, leading to a restraining order. However, he managed to return and repeat his violent behavior, calling into question the effectiveness of security measures at the terminal.
Despite the significant material damage, air traffic and passenger flow were not affected. However, the attack has sparked a debate on access control and the enforcement of restrictions for individuals with a history of incidents at the airport.
Authorities have increased security and announced that they will consider stricter legal actions to prevent such situations from recurring. The incident has caused concern among passengers and airport staff, who are demanding greater protection and stricter access control against potential threats.
The General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC) issued a statement on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, confirming that the suspect was apprehended by airport security personnel and handed over to the authorities. The DGAC also stated that security protocols are being reviewed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
