Brazilian regional airline Voepass Linhas Aéreas announced today the layoff of all ground operations personnel outside its main base in Ribeirão Preto.
The internal announcement affects essential roles such as check-in, technical dispatch, and line maintenance at airports where the airline previously operated before halting activities. The decision comes just over a month after Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) suspended Voepass’ operations.
The suspension stems directly from the crash of flight 2283 in August last year, when a Voepass ATR 72 aircraft crashed near Vinhedo, São Paulo, resulting in 62 fatalities and triggering an extensive investigation into the airline’s operations and safety protocols.
According to aviation news outlet “Viajando com o Luiz,” Voepass is still planning a very limited resumption of operations in the second half of the year. However, sources close to the airline, cited by AEROIN, describe a much bleaker outlook, stating that the chances of a return are “close to zero.” A lack of investor interest and suppliers’ reluctance to reengage with the Ribeirão Preto-based airline are cited as major roadblocks.
The situation is worsened by Voepass’ history of failing to meet labor obligations, including unpaid severance from past layoffs. This raises serious concerns among newly dismissed employees about whether they will receive their termination packages and legally mandated compensation.
