Volaris to Add Four New Domestic Routes from Monterrey in March 2025
The hub will expand to 26 domestic and international destinations, strengthening its role in the airline’s network.
Volaris will expand its network with four new domestic routes from Monterrey (MTY) starting March 30, 2025, according to an update from Cirium. This expansion follows the 19 new connections announced in late 2024.
Despite industry challenges due to Pratt & Whitney engine failures, which have grounded several Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft, Volaris continues to grow in a market dominated by Viva Aerobus. Its main competitor has maintained operations thanks to compensation from the engine manufacturer.
New Domestic Routes
From March 30, 2025, Volaris will expand its domestic network from Monterrey to 26 destinations with the following new routes:
- León/Guanajuato (BJX) – Two daily flights
- Puerto Vallarta (PVR) – One daily flight
- Toluca (TLC) – One daily flight
- Tuxtla Gutiérrez (TGZ) – One daily flight
Additionally, starting in April 2025, Volaris will increase frequencies on four existing routes:
- Mexico City (AICM) – From 14 to 21 weekly flights
- Guadalajara (GDL) – From 21 to 28 weekly flights
- Mérida (MID) – From 2 to 7 weekly flights
- Tijuana (TIJ) – From 7 to 14 weekly flights
Expansion and Competition in Monterrey
With these additions, Volaris will double its available seat-kilometers (ASK) in Monterrey, increasing its share from 8.1% to 16.6%. However, Viva Aerobus remains the dominant carrier with a 61.2% market share.
Monterrey will become Volaris’ fifth-largest hub, accounting for 5.6% of the airline’s total capacity in ASK. The new routes will join 15 existing domestic destinations, including Cancún, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Mérida, and Tijuana. However, Volaris will discontinue flights to La Paz (LAP) and Tapachula (TAP) on January 31, 2025.
New International Routes to the U.S.
Currently, Volaris connects Monterrey to Chicago/O’Hare, Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Antonio. In March and April 2025, it will add four new U.S. routes:
- Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) – March 30
- Denver (DEN) – April 1
- Houston-Intercontinental (IAH) – March 30
- Miami (MIA) – March 30
