As part of its recently announced expansion plan, Vueling will add two new Spanish destinations from London Heathrow Airport (LHR): Bilbao (BIO) and Santiago de Compostela (SCQ). This initiative capitalizes on Ryanair’s reduced Iberian market capacity after the airline criticized rising airport fees in Spain.
The low-cost carrier announced last week the addition of five new aircraft for the summer 2025 season. Three will be based in Barcelona (BCN), Vueling’s main hub, while the other two will be deployed at different airports in Spain. This expansion will enable Vueling to exceed its initial capacity, offering over 27 million seats for the summer—one million more than the previous year—across nearly 100 destinations.
Flights from Heathrow to Bilbao and Santiago de Compostela will commence on March 30, 2025, operated with the Airbus A320neo, which has a capacity of 186 passengers. Both routes will feature daily frequencies, providing a total of 2,520 weekly seats.
• Heathrow – Bilbao
- Flight VY 6310 BIO 13:55 - 14:45 LHR
- Flight VY 6311 LHR 15:30 - 18:35 BIO
• Heathrow - Santiago de Compostela
- Flight VY 7112 SCQ 16:55 - 18:00 LHR
- Flight VY 7113 LHR 18:50 - 22:05 SCQ
While these routes will not have direct competition from Heathrow, they will indirectly compete with Ryanair, which connects Santiago de Compostela with London/Stansted (STN).
Vueling Expands Presence in London
With the addition of Bilbao and Santiago de Compostela, Vueling will increase its destinations from Heathrow to four, alongside Barcelona (BCN) and Paris/Orly (ORY).
These routes complement Vueling’s twelve existing destinations from London/Gatwick (LGW), which include connections to Spain, Italy, and France. According to Cirium data, the airline will operate 198 weekly flights from both London airports during the northern summer of 2025, with a total weekly capacity of 71,388 seats.
During this season, Vueling will operate from Gatwick to:
• Spain: A Coruña (LCG), Alicante (ALC), Asturias (OVD), Barcelona (BCN), Bilbao (BIO), Málaga (AGP), Santiago de Compostela (SCQ), Sevilla (SVQ), and Valencia (VLC).
• Italy: Florence (FLR) and Rome/Fiumicino (FCO).
• France: Paris/Orly (ORY).
