With more than 2,200 weekly services to over 90 destinations, Latin America and the Caribbean is a key region in the American Airlines network, especially as it has become one of the fastest recovering regions in the post-pandemic period.
It is within this context that the company today announced the new management team that will be in charge of its Latin America and Caribbean rollout, with José María Giraldo assuming the position of Managing Director for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, and Gonzalo Schames as Director for South America and Strategic Alliances, both reporting to José A. Freig, Vice President of International.
“This year the Latin America and Caribbean regions have seen enormous growth, with seven new destinations, more than 40 new routes, and strategic alliances in South America on the rise,” said José Freig, Vice President of International at American.
“We have outstanding leaders on our team who will continue to further empower the international division and I am personally very pleased to see Jose Maria and Gonzalo step into their new roles,” he added.
José María Giraldo joined the company more than 30 years ago, having worked in various departments such as Flight Service, Sales, Cargo, and Operations. He currently oversees American’s operations in Mexico, Central America, Ecuador, and Colombia.
Gonzalo Schames joined the company in 1993 as a passenger service agent in Buenos Aires, and today he is in charge of operations in the Southern Cone (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay).
American Airlines in the region
American Airlines has dominated the market between the United States and Latin America/Caribbean for several decades.
Based on information obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, during December the company represents 27.6% of the seat offer (with 2.7 million on 16,600 flights in both directions), followed by United Airlines accounting for 17.2% and JetBlue with 14%.
