DESAER and magniX partner to create the ATL-100H, a hybrid-electric regional courier

Electric propulsion technology developer magniX today announced a partnership with Brazilian aeronautics company DESAER to develop the ATL-100H, a hybrid electric variant of the ATL-100 regional jet.

The ATL-100H is expected to save 25 to 40 percent of fuel depending on flight range, a significant achievement in reducing carbon emissions. The innovative design of the hybrid electric ATL-100H is a further step towards an all-electric aircraft from DESAER, supporting the globally recognized need to accelerate sustainable aviation practices.

The original ATL-100 model is being developed by DESAER and will be the first to enter service. MagniX technology will be used to develop the ATL-100H, which will be powered by two magni350 electric propulsion units (EPU) and two turboprop engines.

The ATL-100 is being developed by DESAER with engineers who, in the past, worked at Embraer. The idea of the project is to fill the niche left by the EMB-110 Bandeirante aircraft, in dire need of a replacement after almost 50 years of operation.

The ATL-100 will be a twin-engine high-wing aircraft, traditional configuration, conventional empennage, semi-monocoque structure with central fuselage section in metallic material, non-pressurized, with control surfaces, rear ramp and non-structural parts in composite material, with fixed tricycle landing gear.

One of the strong points is that it will have a rear loading ramp, allowing it to receive up to 3 LD3 pallets in the full-load version, or quick-change versions for ambulance, humanitarian evacuation and equipped parachutists. The ramp and spacious cabin volume put the ATL-100 ahead of its competitors: for example, the Cessna 408 SkyCourier.

The battery-hybrid aircraft will use both an electric motor and a traditional fuel engine, aiming to achieve significant levels of fuel savings and reduced carbon emissions without compromising the performance and range required for regional aviation. The magnX electric propulsion system will reduce risk, operating costs and noise, while promoting greater efficiency.

“The implications of creating the hybrid electric ATL-100H are far-reaching, and will have a positive impact on environmental sustainability and aircraft operational flexibility in the Brazil region,” said Simon Roads, Head of Sales at magniX. “The company is leading the electrification of the skies, and our partnership with DESAER will transform regional travel for both passengers and cargo.”

“The ATL-100H and future versions of the aircraft will enable customers and operators to achieve carbon reduction targets while maintaining the low operating costs offered by DESAER’s ATL family of aircraft,” said Evandro Fileno, CEO of DESAER. “The ATL-100H will enable operators to connect more remote communities through aviation, opening up greater economic opportunities throughout Brazil,” he concluded.
